Default Let's Talk about Commuting to Work

My life is currently in transition, I work in the city but would like to live in a rural community since that is where I am from. I am curious about other people's work commutes.

Stats Canada compiled a study on Canadians commute to work. it seems that 15 to 29 minutes in the average for people in urban areas. currently I walk to work it takes me 40 minutes on average. If I moved I would likely be looking at an hour plus drive.

Do you walk, bike, drive or take public transit?

How long is your commute?

I usually take a car2go. It takes about 15 minutes. A bike takes about 25. The bus is about 50 minutes.

15 minutes by bike in the summer, 25-40 on a bad day in the winter.

I could never drive 2 hours a day for commuting. That would suck my soul. If I ever made that choice, it would be for 2 or 3 days a week and work the rest from home.

My commute ranges between 15-20 minutes unless you're navigating Armageddon.

And by Armageddon I mean 'Calgary Road Construction in the Summer' and not the ill-fated Micheal Bay film terrorized by Ben Affleck and Aerosmith.

When I am working it's about 15 seconds across my back deck to my work shop.

I drive to a station and take the LRT to work. from my door to the door at work is about 35 minutes.

If I drive the entire way it would be about 35 minutes in the morning and 60 minutes home.

Ya, but then you forget your keys to the shop, and have to go all the way back. Not ideal.

My commute is usually about 15-20 minutes. I made it in 12 minutes when I hit every light once.

Chestermere --> NE

Except now when I'm dropping my kid off at a camp at UofC, so I have to drive across the city twice every morning, bleh.

Walk about 10 minutes to work. I have rarely had a commute this short and stress free. Now I do anything I can to keep it this way. The next stop for me hopefully is work form home but still have to grind it out a bit before I am positioned to do so. I used to not mind taking transit as it gave me time to read books now I don't read nearly as much as I would like to. My transit commute would range from 30 minutes to an hour. As I get older then less people I have to encounter before work usually means less aggravation.

It takes me 10-20 minutes commuting by driving. When I lived closer, my walk commuting to work was 10-15 minutes.

Unnecessary commuting is one of the biggest things I loathe in life. What is the point of living outside with a big yard intentionally if the commute takes away 2 hours+ of your day preventing you from enjoying that time.

I have done the 2 hour to and 2 hour back when I lived in Toronto at some point. Commuting is hell.

Even a 1 hour commute to and back each day, that is 10 hours a week lost outright that you add on to your 40 hours a week workday. That's about 520 hours in a full year or 21 days out of 365 spent commuting...

That's simply an insane loss of time spent away from your children or things you love.

I walk. Usually about 30-35 minutes each way. Could bike in 10-15 minutes I'd guess but I enjoy the walk and don't want to pay to park a bike in our building parkade. Really don't miss my old LRT commute at all.

30 minutes each way. I can usually be flexible enough that I can avoid rush hours as long as I can get parking in my spot downtown.

The last three years it hasn't been an issue.

I drive due to it being a 22 mile trip. ~25 minutes in the morning (I leave at 5:45), anywhere from 28-65 minutes on the way home. Traffic is terrible in my city as I leave work @2:15, so it's not technically rush hour.

I drive. About 35 minutes in the morning and closer to 50-60 minutes in the afternoon. My company moved us out of DT a few years ago and I want to slit my wrists every day now, the drive is such a waste of life. It used to be so much better (and quicker) when we were DT. And the cost both in fuel and wear/tear/maintenance is noticeably higher now.

Thinking of perhaps trying transit now that the kids have graduated and there is not more shuttling around after work. But it would be an hour in the morning and closer to 90 minutes in the afternoon to do so. Not sure if the cost savings would outweigh the increased time, I lose enough of my life every day to commuting as it is.

I work in the suburbs and live inner-city. Going against traffic my commute is about 10 minutes.
