Facebook just had the biggest wipeout in stock market history.
Quote:
Shares plunged 19% on Thursday after executives warned that revenue growth would slow as the company focuses on user privacy.
The sell-off vaporized about $119 billion in market value — the biggest single-day loss for any public company in history, according to Thomson Reuters.
For founder Mark Zuckerberg, the loss came to almost $16 billion, according to Forbes, which tracks billionaire wealth in real time. That dropped him from fourth to sixth on the list of richest people in the world.

Facebook and Twitter elected Trump, and do nothing to stop him. I hope they both die.

Social media is nothing but Anti-Trump bias nowadays, especially with all the snowflakes on these sites.

Not sure 'normal' people bother much with it at all. It's the 15% fanatics on either end who spam the rest of us.
To be honest, I would rather see your cat videos.

Not unexpected though?
Facebook was in bed with Cambridge Analytica, harvesting all sorts of data which was handed to the Trump team.
Now Cambridge Analytica has "gone out of business" (as in they just changed their name) and Facebook is desperately trying to back track and say user security is now their main focus.
Hope the stock plunges further.

That’s not really what happened though
The trump team chose to engage Cambridge Analytica realizing the value of this information while the democrats made fun of their poor online and demographic targeting. Facebook and Cambridge are really nuetral actors, they were pieces of technology sold to the highest bidder. That the people who chose to use these tools was the Trump campaign isn’t really the fault of Facebook.
Facebook does not have an obligation to do anything beyond what was require by law. Remember that every user knowingly or not agreed to this process. I think blaming Facebook for people’s careless treatment of both the information they receive from Facebook and the personal information they give Facebook is the problem.
People’s media literacy was the cause not the actions of Cambridge, the Russians and Facebook.

Facebook ads are widely credited with Trump's success.
On that basis, how much money do you think the US will spend on Facebook advertising in the 2020 election cycle?

All this Trump/Cambridge Analytica talk is basically a red herring. That hit the stock a couple months ago. This decline was due to reduced growth in users in particular, and while that could be related it seems a little unlikely to me. Basically all the people that were super mad and deleting Facebook a few months ago came back and forgot about these issues within a week or two anyway.

I think it's a great time to jump in.
While user growth is slowing, ad revenues via Facebook/Instagram are still relatively healthy.
I would suspect that trend to continue for the foreseeable future until or unless there is a platform that usurps Instagram.
Between Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram, I believe Facebook has user data on ~2.5 billion people.
The company still generates massive revenues and this decline will be short-lived.

WhatsApp and Instagram will ensure that FB is around for a long, long time.
Now is probably a good chance to get in on Facebook stock.

It's not really that big of a drop relative to its own value. It's back to where it was happily sitting two months ago. The real story is in the trend line. The price today is still above that long term upward line so no reason to sell. If you can figure out a reason to buy then that's what you do.
