Anyone Ever Build a Tire Rack?
Inspired by the Home Improvement, Bought a New House, and Beginner Woodworking threads as well as just getting a ton of home improvement stuff done over the last week, I was thinking of using some left over 2x4s and building a tire rack for the shed.
We have two cars (thus 8 tires). I've done some preliminary googling but assume that the CP brain trust will have the better advice/suggestions/plans.

I don't own a tire. Let alone many tires that would necessitate an entire rack.

Unless the rack will be sitting on the ground, I'm not sure I'd want one made out of wood- especially not 2x4s. Off the ground that is a lot of weight, plus tires don't always go into them gently.
Any of my tires that live in the shed just get stacked on the floor.

If you just hang a horizontal board and fix it with chain on the ends then it folds up (relax and hang against the wall) if there are no tires on it at the time.

I have one similar to the Canadian Tire one above. Quality is good the only drawback is the size since it tends to take up a lot of space. And it does fold up but in reality if you have two different sets of tires you'll always have a set on there (summer or winter)

The ones at CT, Partsource, etc, often go on sale for $24. 2x4 ones are mega bulky and more prone to failure at the outstretched arm's joints (where cross bar connects).
Unless it is in an area no where near a car (should it fail) I wouldn't risk it for that small amount of savings.

It would probably be better to build a little coral on the floor of the garage to keep them from rolling around. Built it about as high as the tallest tires you would put there and then build some shelving over top to make use of the space.

I did this when I built my shed, left enough room underneath for my lawnmower for easy access.
Just be careful of the space you need to fit the tire in at the top, the roof stud was getting in the way of the second tire so I had to chip out a gap in the front support for it to sit in.
Also I tied the top rack to the roof for support and then did an angle support for the bottom, you cannot do an angle support for the top rack as it will get in the way of the bottom tires.

I mathed one out for myself.

It's held up well since Sept.
I wanna add a piece of ply on top to store my tire tools.
Also I wish I left more room on the bottom to slide my hydraulic jack under.
was about $40 total and about 1.5hr inclusive of setting up and taking down my mitre saw.

Princess Auto had a "Heavy Duty" Rolling Tire Rack (On Casters) for $120 about a week ago. Holds two sets of tires and manoeuvrable. Just perfect for what i need, and sharing in case it helps anyone...realise not what the OP is looking for.
