Question Camping in Waterton

Considering taking the family to Waterton later in August.

I have never camped down there.

Any campground recommendations?

In the park, I think the only option is the townsite campground. Other options are closed from the fire.

The townsite is open and a handful of the trails have been reopened. Crandell campground, Red Rock canyon and Cameron Lake are all still closed.

Waterton is one of my favorite places, but not sure this is the year to go unless you are happy with visiting the townsite area.

What BlackArcher said. We're going middle of August for the first time in 14 years, but this time we'll camp at the townsite. The downside of the townsite campground is no fires. The upside is you don't have to wash all your fabrics from campfire smoke smell when you get home!

It is nicely convenient to all things in town and also to anything that is open right now.

We used to camp at Crandell Mountain Campgrounds years ago when it was 1st come 1st serve. It was best camping my wife and I ever did. I can't wait for it to open up again in a year or two.

I'm also going down there in August and am not sure where to camp.

I've camped at Bertha Bay, which is a nice locale, but the trail gets quite a few hikers now, and there's often black bears around.

There are tent pads up at some of the lakes in the higher basins that are some of the most spectacular places I've ever camped. Anything on that Avion ridge loop would be cool, also the Alderson Lake campgrounds looked ok passing through there on the carthew alderson hike. Could be a heck of a hike to haul kids and gear in to though depending on their age!

Too bad to hear about the fire closures.

My wife was recently staying at the crooked creek camp site and they allow fires. They really enjoyed while hiking around. About 5-10 out of town.

The townsite has a campground. If you drive closer to the US border, there's one called Belly River. Both are Parks Canada campgrounds.

Waterton Springs and Crooked Creek are privately owned campgrounds nearby.

Pincher Creek has some more options if you are willing to drive a little more.

Police Outpost Provincial Park is not bad. Maybe a half hour drive to Waterton.
