Default [confirmed] Flames will go after Derek Ryan in FA

Listening to the Fan right now, when asked about Ryan, Peters confirmed the Flames will go after him. Mentioned he was a Spokane Washington kid so hopefully that may give them a leg up. Also said there will be a lot of interest around the league for him.

Yeah, Peters just said "hopefully we have a leg up there" in signing Derek Ryan.

I feel like they are going to let Shore walk and bring in Ryan.. otherwise, there will be too many bodies on the pro roster (unless the Flames go the usual route and send back down all young players who are not automatically supposed to be stars)

I thought they already let Shore walk?

I don't like giving the coach their "guy" just leads to over deployment in most cases. Which is one thing canes fan said about Peters and Ryan.

A lot of people still think they will continue negotiations and bring him back. However, you are right, as of now they have let him walk.

RH shot, good on faceoffs ... would certainly fit a need. If it's for 2 years or so, I'm all for it.

What am I missing? I had a quick look at Ryans stats as I didn't know anything about him. A few years in the NHL at the age of 31 and 3rd line player stats. Is this not the type of player we have plenty of but younger?

It would be hard to imagine him not getting 3 years from some team.

Exactly what role would a Derek Ryan provide for our lineup?

(genuine question, not sarcasm)

Versteeg replacement? Bottom 6 C/RW depth?

IMO, we need a top 6 guy, not a bottom 6 guy.

Agree totally, don't waste the money on him, let someone cheaper and younger play that role.

Ryan is the most unofficial official Calgary Flame ever.

which RH center who's good on FOs and scored 15/38 last year do we have? He'd be a solid depth addition that can play in the middle six.

I don't know. Treliving just gave Peters two good players from his old team. Are the Hurricanes really that good a team that the Flames should be bringing in their coach and all these players? Ryan doesn't address the scoring issue and to me will simply take ice time away from guys like Jankowski and Bennett.

I maybe the minority here but I am tired of these signings for the bottom 6. Let the young guys finally take the ball and run with it. Year after year we see the same type of signing and it always fails.

3 years max, $2 million AAV max is what I would hope for.

15 goals, 38 points last year with a 56.5% face off percentage last year, 15+ minutes per night.

He's 31 but not a lot of pro miles on.

Ryan's advanced stats are very strong and he's very good in the face-off circle as he's put up 55.3%, and 56.5% during the last 2 seasons. He's likely being viewed as the stabilizing force on the 4th line and will be a mainstay on PP 2.
