Flames interested in Tobias Rieder
not a surprise as they were reportedly after him at the deadline
https://twitter.com/user/status/1012694592309768192
Friedman also says he believes the Flames are after Rieder

I'm glad we're looking at some solid options for the bottom 6 outside of what is in the organization. Reider brings speed and competitiveness along with some offense. I can't speak to much else about him, but I like him for a bottom 6 winger spot.
Anything that forces the Flames to either put Brouwer in the minors or buy him out would be ideal.

said it before, but signing two depth forwards would help us a lot. Ryan and Rieder wold be perfect to improve our abysmal bottom six.

To me if we bring in both Ryan and Rieder that’s not bringing in that top 6 guy that we’ve been rumoured to be interested in. I think the Flames have a plan to get rid of Brouwer and a deal in place for Frolik to open up space for the youth movement and incoming UFA’s.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Top 6 UFA/Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Top 6 UFA/Lindholm
Bennett - Jankowski - Rieder
Mangiapane - Ryan - Dube
Reaves, Lazar
Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Andersson
Smith
Gillies/Rittich

I like it. Rieder is a solid bottom 6. Plus, he has a bone to pick with the Oil.

Does Rieder have interest in the Flames? The Flames have interest in Tavares too, but Tavares has zero interest in Calgary. Does anyone know if Rieder has any interest in playing for the Flames?

That’s perfect - sign him to a 2 year 1.75 per deal like Ferly’s

did you read the quoted tweet in the OP? Kinda have to think that if the flames are showing interest it means they must have reached out and talked during the courting period. I’m sure he would be interested.

These "depth" signings basically confirm that no young guys will be given a fair look this summer which is a bit upsetting to me. The Flames seemingly love to discount our bottom 6 drafted players and instead fill those spots with 'vets' just about every year since I can remember.
At what point are we going to solidify our top 6, keep some bottom 6 guys around and give our kids a shot? Guys like Mangiapane, Foo, Dube, Klimchuk need to show what they can do for an extended period of time here yet we never actually keep room open for these kids between current roster players and bringing in 'depth' NHL ready players every year.
This year we could potentially have: (based on the rumors)
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Rieder - Jankowski - Bennett
Brouwer - Ryan - Reaves
Hathaway, Lazar
Where does that leave the Mangiapane/Dube/Foo/Klimchuks? These are kids who need to produce at an NHL level so we can continue to progress our lineup with a mix of high salary veteran producers and low cost entry level RFA's.
I'd much rather give 2 or 3 of the guys above a fair shot, save the money on the 3 acquisitions for what will probably be 2-3M a piece x 2-3 years and use ALL that cap on a current top 6 winger who has a "shoot first" mentality - Kessel comes to mind.
Perennial cup contenders seemingly have this figured out and yet you'll never see the Flames explore this to the extent that 2-3 of these kids make it out of camp. Always told that the flames were "forced" to go out and get these guys because the rookies didn't cut it @ camp... I'm not buying it these days.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Jankowski - Kessel
Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
Mangiapane - Lazar - Brouwer
Foo/Hathaway
In reality, we need to shed some forward "depth" guys at this point if we want to bring up the young guys as it stands without signing players like Ryan, Reaves and Rieder.

Tobias Rieder is not the type of player who can afford to say "I'm not interested" to anyone. So the more pertinent question is whether teams he would have more interest in, also have interest in him.

I feel like a bidding war is going to happen for Rieder. I am not sure we are going to like what we find on the other side of that when the dust settles, at least from a price tag perspective.

I get what you're trying to say but they HAVE shown that they'll do it if a young guy forces their hand. Like Jankowski last year, it didn't happen right out of camp but they made it work
I get we all want these guys to come in and light it up but they have to prove they actually can first. Mangiapane's 0 pts in 10 games doesn't mean a guarenteed roster spot to me. Gifting these guys ice time before they're ready is what Oilers do, not perennial cup contenders.

IMO if young players can't come in and outplay Brouwer, Lazar or Hathaway, then they are still AHL players.

I think they can, but if you think the Flames are going to pay Troy 4.5 mil to NOT play on the Flames roster you're kidding yourself.
We just saw this happen ALL season last year.
That contract unless bought out completely F__K's us this year sadly.

Young guys will get a bit of an extra look in camp this year too with all the vets going to China the first week of the pre season
