How so? This is a ufa deal that is actually in line with the player's value, especially when you compare it to what JVR and Neal are about to get.

Hard to believe Couture is already 29 years old. This deal doesn't kick in until he's 30. Versatile player, but a 25 goal, 60 point guy making 8 million until he's 38 years old? Yikes.

Of course, it's the Sharks so I'm sure he'll probably take a big drink from the fountain of youth they've got access to out there in SJ and he'll continue to put up career numbers throughout the deal.

Comeon man, its been a few days now. If you are so envious of the Sharks why don't you just start cheering for them? You might be a lot happier which is what matters at the end of the day.

They are a good team, I agree, but they arent perfect.

They annoy the #### out of me. I could never cheer for anyone but Calgary. Besides I said this deal is a terrible deal. Paying a 60 point player $8 million until he's 38 shouldn't work, but since it's the Sharks I'm sure it will work is my point.

Meh, they will get into the second round again next year and then get knocked out. Story as old as time.

8M+ used to be superstar calibre player with a Stanley Cup. Now 2nd line center on a team with center depth (aka Draisaitl/Couture) are $8M players. San Jose is not going anywhere with Couture as their top line C in my opinion.

You are correct about JVR/Neal, but this proves the point if anything. There had been another jump in overpayment. 2-3 years ago top 6 free agent wingers were in the 6x6 ball park (Lucic, Eriksson etc.)

$1M used to be superstar money too. I remember when Gretzky cracked it.

That is a lot of cake for a 60 point player.

With each new signing, I am more and more pleased with the price at which our core is locked up. If we can get Tkachuk inked for something in the $6s, we will have an entire core signed, all under $7M.

The Flames in really, really good shape if we can just get a couple of the young guys to take the next step.

I get your point, but it is blind to not acknowledge there has been another step change in salaries. The last time it happened was the "6x6 contract era". It will be interesting to see in the next couple of years if we are reaching capacity on the salary cap and these associated contracts or if the league will find ways to continue to grow. I would suggest that as it stands right now, the league is pretty close to what can be achieved in terms of gate generated revenue. Hard to imagine fans will be able to absorb another 50% increase in the next 5 or so years. If the cap does stagnate, 10% is a lot to pay your #2 center for 8 of his UFA years.

That's a rich contract, though with the potential of Salary cap being higher in 8 years, maybe it doesn't look that bad when he is 38 years old.

Sharks have had a history of players playing really well till their late 30s though. Thornton, Marleau and even Nabokov are a testament to that.

6x6 is still pretty rich for RFAs. Gaudreau and Monahan didn't do much more than that and they are better than at least two of the three 6x6 players.

Overpayment for Couture. 6.5 mil per year is probably the right amount for him

Time to take advantage could be in a year or two when other teams start getting really tight to the cap and can't retain some of their top RFA's.
