Do they technically not have to wait until July 1?
I'm guessing a nice even 10M to align with Kopitar's contract, but Doughty could have got much more.

They technically had to wait til July 1 on the Kovalchuk signing but announced it anyway.

It isn't valid until July 1, but if both the team and the player trust each other to actually put ink to paper on July 1 (or not tear up the post dated contract) then they can probably sign a couple days early anyway. It's not like other teams were going to swoop in and steal him anyway, that wouldn't have happened for another year. Like my daughter said the other day "no farm no howl".

Gonna say $80 million just like Kopitar.
Check that, going to go with $88 million. $11 million AAV would be the same % of cap that Kopitar signed for.

Pending the Tavares contract (and I guess EK, Seguin, etc), Doughty will have the 2nd highest cap hit in 2019/20 after McDavid.
