Icon48 2018 Offseason Coaching Carousel

With AV the first firing, who else do we think is on the way outs and where might they land?
Who else, like Sutter has been on the sidelines already?
Any assistants ready for the Head Coach role?
Big names from the AHL or CHL?

Team - Coach - Start Date - Status
Anaheim: Randy Carlyle (June 14, 2016) Can't see any reason for a change no matter how the playoffs pan out. Safe.

Arizona: Rick Tocchet (July 11, 2017) Recent hire, team played well the 2nd half. Safe.

Boston: Bruce Cassidy (February 7, 2017) At the top of the league. Super Safe.

Buffalo: Phil Housley (June 15, 2017) Too early in team rebuild to change. Respected former player. Safe.

Calgary: Vacant Glen Gulutzan (June 17, 2016) Fired! Fired! Fired!

Carolina: Vacant Bill Peters (June 19, 2014) Peters exercises his out clause and resigns.

Chicago: Joel Quenneville (October 16, 2008) Blackhawks confirm Quenneville being retained. Safe.

Colorado: Jared Bednar (August 25, 2016) Back in playoffs. Safe.

Columbus: John Tortorella (October 21, 2015) Popular in Columbus, but it's time for the team to do well in playoffs. Slight risk if bounced 4/5 in 1st round. Possible fire.

Dallas: Vacant Ken Hitchcock (April 13, 2017) Announced he will retire.

Detroit: Jeff Blashill (June 9, 2015) Team announces Blashill will remain coach for next season. Safe.

Edmonton: Todd McLellan (May 19, 2015) Oilers are way behind on their regularly scheduled Skype firings but McLellan won't be sent packing unless Gretzky agrees to take the place behind the bench with Coffee, MacTavish, Lowe, Kurri, Katz kid, and McDavid as his assistants. Possible fire.

Florida: Bob Boughner (June 12, 2017) Panthers just on the outside looking in, after the firing Gallant mess. Safe.

Los Angeles: John Stevens (April 23, 2017) First year and back in the playoffs. Super safe.

Minnesota: Bruce Boudreau (May 7, 2016) Highly touted hire, nearing retirement and will probably be allowed to coach until he's ready to. Team performing well anyhow. Super Safe.

Montreal: Claude Julien (February 14, 2017) Hired mid season last year to knock out Therrien, immediately after being fired by Boston. Team played poorly this year but until Bergevin is replaced I don't see a coaching change. Safe.

Nashville: Peter Laviolette (May 6, 2014) Placed in a safe between seasons. Safe.

New Jersey: John Hynes (June 2, 2015) Hynes can thank Hall, via Ray Shero, via Chiarelli. Playoffs. Safe.

New York: Doug Weight (January 17, 2017) Put in place mid season last year. Team fell short of expectations this year. Tavares situation. Possible fire.

New York: Vacant Vigneault (June 21, 2013) fired April 7th 2018, or more like a mutual parting. NY gave him 3yr 12 million last year with knowledge they'd probably move into a rebuild.

Ottawa: Guy Boucher (May 8, 2016) Melnyk is cheap. Probably Safe.

Philadelphia: Dave Hakstol (May 18, 2015) Back in playoffs after making it in his first season. Safe.

Pittsburgh: Mike Sullivan (December 12, 2015) Back to back cups. 100 pt season. Unless he's looking for a new challenge... Safe.

San Jose: Peter DeBoer (May 28, 2015) Exit to the Oilers last year . Tough match-up with the Ducks this year but probably only a slight chance of a change with an early exit. Possible fire.

St. Louis: Mike Yeo (February 1, 2017) Coach killers. Blues fire Hitchcock in favour of Yeo but still continue to wet the bed. Time for a full on rebuild in Stl with a coach/management clearinghouse? Fire.

Tampa Bay: Jon Cooper (March 25, 2013) 2nd longest current coaching run. Team expected to push for the cup now. Will probably be given a couple of more seasons to do so. Super safe.

Toronto: Mike Babcock (May 20, 2015) 8Y,$50M, playoffs, Super Safety Safe Safe.

Vancouver: Travis Green (April 26, 2017) First year of rebuild. Team has lots of youth/prospect potential and cap room. Safe.

Vegas: Gerard Gallant (April 13, 2017) Magician, unless he gets a show on the strip along side Penn & Teller he's there for a while. Royal Flush Safe.

Washington: Barry Trotz (May 26, 2014) His 4th attempt at a deep run in Wsh. I think it's finals or bust. Possible fire.

Winnipeg: Paul Maurice (January 12, 2014) Survives the axe last year and Chevy's patience pays off. Super safe.

Big names available to be thrown into the hat: Lindy Ruff, Dan Bylsma, Darryl Sutter, Dave Tippett, Alain Vigneault, Bill Peters

Thanks for the effort, great work!

I really only know NHL head coaches. Assistants, AHL, and College are not on my radar, so I'll only focus on the coaches with NHL experience. Let's see who might be available to the Flames this offseason:

Currently Available:
Darryl Sutter - Several unknowns, including if there's any mutual desire. Not sure if his style would fit with these players. However, he's known as an expert motivator, a skill that we have debated endlessly GG might not possess.

Vigneault - Another coach with a solid track record. Accused of preferring vets, and BT seems to love having vets linger around the team that should have no business on an NHL team. Might be a dangerous combination, however still one of my personal favourites.

Dan Bylsma - We are already the team that hands out second and third chances to players. I'd prefer not to do the same with coaches.

Bob Hartley - Ha

Therrien - Not high on my list

Tippett - NO! I like hockey.

Possibly Available:
Bill Peters - Nah.

John Tortorella - Similar to Sutter in a few ways in my mind, and may be that motivating factor that the Flames need. Personally I'd go nuts watching him but at least it would be entertaining.

McLellan - Nah. Although he's probably not a horrible coach, he's got the Oilers stank.

Doug Weight - I don't have a good feel of what he is like as a coach. Was a very good player. That's about it for my opinion of him.

Guy Boucher - Might actually be a good fit for the Flames. However, doesn't have the track record of many other guys here.

Peter DeBoer - Another interesting candidate if available, however not at the top of my list.

Mike Yeo - When his teams struggle, they struggle in spectacular fashion. However, I would be on board with him as a coach of the Flames, if he becomes available.

Barry Trotz - Not sure what to make of this guy. Clearly has the experience and has a moderate amount of success in the NHL. Could be a great guy for this roster given the talent on the blueline.

There's a reasonable chance that Southampton will get relegated this season so perhaps Kruger will make himself available.

In a perfect world, Krueger would absolutely be my choice. Second would be Sutter.

Nice work TopFiveRecords - really shows the brief shelf life of an NHL head coach on any given team.

How does Yeo keeps the HC job is unbelievable. His track record as a coach is below abysmal.

I hope we don't touch Ruff and Bylsma with a long stick. Ruff's coaching prime time is over. Bylsma - is just not a good coach.

Yup, nothing from the team or local media to indicate Yeo is on shaky ground. I do think the Blues make at least one significant roster move. Lots of blame, deserved or not, being pointed at Pietrangelo, Tarasenko and Allen

Willie Desjardins please!!!This guy has did nothing but win at every level he has coached at except with a poor quality Canucks Team.Coached the Medicine Hat Tigers for few years and was absolutely loved by fans and his players. This guy knows how to get the most out of his players and he would turn the Flames into a contender instantly.Tigers haven’t been the same since he left.

Foster Brooks in todays NY Post suggests that the Rags hire Scott Stevens.

Quote:
If the Rangers are seeking a coach who can teach while re-establishing a no-nonsense culture and hard-edged identity on Broadway, then management should simply look across the river to where Scott Stevens lives.
