Default on this day 50 years ago the world lost MLK

Its kind of covered in my history thread but really it deserves its own thread. Martin Luther King junior. One of the greatest Orators that the world had ever seen, one of the giants of the civil rights movement, who lead marches and motivated millions and told the world that the Status Quo of institutional and national racism was ok, was gunned down. On that day, the world lost greatness

I just thought it would be nice to have a thread with some of his speeches.

Robert Kennedy announces his death

I wanted to make sure that speech was included here. Frankly my hope is as many people as possible listen to these speeches and really hear the messages. Especially now.

Thank you for sharing these speeches. We can all use a little more compassion and understanding of each other.

If you’re ever in Atlanta and have the chance, I would recommend the Civil Rights Museum. There is a significant portion dedicated to King and it’s really impressive. Some of the other sections and exhibits are really powerful and impactful as well. Then there are a few times where it seems so surreal and crazy that not only did people think that way, but it was legal and accepted. I guess I mainly felt that way trying to explain some of the asinine laws to my son and him looking at me thinking WTF?!

Anyway, it’s remarkable and King really was an amazing man.

I wonder what these great leaders from history think about when they see where we are as a race, country and culture today....

Saw a great roundtable yesterday on MSNBC that talked about how we have all made him out to be a saint, that people do a disservice not being honest about who he was, what he stood for, what he believed.

One of my favorite parts is when they talked about the Black Churches and the prosperity movement, how utterly opposite that is of MLKs ideals.

I have a book containing most of his best speeches and writings, including this letter. This book, along with the book "Black Like Me" gives a great insight into Black American history.

From the letter, I find this simple sentence to say so much.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
