Hard to argue with that contract seeing he's still able to play 23 minutes a game. Nice that they only have to commit for one season as you never know when a guy this age will see his game totally fall off.

Hell of a bounce back season for him. Very impressive at his age.

My favourite Chara story is this brief quote from Players Tribune article The Trap by Chris Collins:
"Then I walked in on the first day for our strength tests and witnessed the life-changing sight of 6-foot-9 Zdeno Chara doing 33 perfect pull-ups in a banana hammock speedo. I’m pretty sure he could’ve done 50. He jumped down from the bar, turned and walked away like it was nothing. Holy ####, I realized. This is serious business."
Chara is an absolute unit.

Since Marleau's rookie year, the most amount of games he's missed in a season has been 5. He started the same season as Chara and has played 1569 games.

Has there been a better UFA contract in the last 20 years?
The few others that come to mind:
Hossa to Chi
Niedermayer to Ana
Belfour to Dal (holy crap, that might have been more than 20 years now...)
None of their teams win cups without them, but I think everyone but Boston still has a really strong chance if you replaced the UFA with another 'pretty good' player. I don't think Boston has much chance of winning with anyone else not named Chara or Lidstrom.

I don't think you can count the Hossa contract seeing the rash shenanigans because he wasn't going to play for the reduced rate at the end and the Hawks badly needed the league to go along with the rash thing or they would have incurred big cap penalties.

Still convinced the guy plays at 80% all the time for fear of committing manslaughter on the ice.

I'd probably agree if they'd only won 1 cup, but 3 cups and a full decade of being a top contender is worth that cost IMO.
Hossa is probably the most easily replaceable guy on my little list though (even though his contributions are often underrated). Looking at that UFA class, they could have gotten someone like Gaborik, Gionta, Samuelsson, or even Joel Ward and probably still raised the cup (maybe not 3 times though).

I watched him in Prince George when he played there and you could tell he was holding back a lot. Probably a good thing, but at the time, I wondered if it would affect his development to not be playing with 100% all the time. Obviously he did alright of course.

A Chara - Karlsson pairing would have been insane. With Bishop between the pipes...
And we think the Flames have a history of boneheaded moves.
