Default Question about layoff and documentation

I was laid off, a bit before Christmas. After a layoff, am I not supposed to get some "paperwork" from Revenue Canada or some other government agency? I was also laid off 7 years ago, and then received a piece of paper in the mail. I recall it had on it my severance pay, "position redundant" or something similar, and some other info.

And am I supposed to take that and do something funky with it on my taxes (for the severance portion)?

I'm just wondering if that's standard or was a onetime thing from my previous company. I no longer have the paperwork to go back and check, unfortunately.

Thanks

You might be thinking of a “Record of Employment”. They don’t have to give it you and can submit it directly to service Canada for EI purposes. I was laid off before Christmas and never got anything besides a T4 for last year for tax purposes.

You should receive an ROE (Record Of Employment) from the employer. This will outline hours worked, monies earned and severance pay. This can be submitted to the government to begin an EI claim.
You'll receive a T4 from the company as well for tax filing purposes.
You should not expect anything directly from CRA as a result of the layoff.

I think ROE has to be completed within three days of the layoff. If you haven't received it, contact the company and they should be able to provide it asap. Could probably even email it to you.

Service Canada is leaning more towards having people registered on their database with an account so it could be accessed there more conveniently (if you have an account) but you are correct, they do need to complete it and need to issue it to the employee.

As for the 'Severance Portion' for your taxes that you refer to, that is likely the T4 and that is to be issued to you prior to the end of this month or, again, available online.

Most companies won't issue an ROE directly to you anymore, they will send it directly to Service Canada with your reason for separation.

Your severance pay will be on your T4 that they have to issue prior to the end of February for you for 2017.

If you received a lump sum payout for severance, it was probably already taxed, but it may not have been enough. It usually goes 0-5k = 10%, 5-10k = 20% or 10k+ = 30% or something similar. Depending on your yearly income, you may still owe some money.

This. ROE goes to service Canada.
