This is a step in the right direction, but a playoff spot won't be won or lost with the 4th line. This team needs a leadership change, i.e.: coach.
This is small beans, and frankly, I only have faith that Janko and Hathaway have what it takes to be NHLers from all the AHL callups this season.

This is not specifically to you, but this whole "shake up" idea is purely from the media. I do not recall seeing the team saying a shake up was coming, like MacT did with his "bold moves", which is rightfully still mocked...

Flames should have been doing this type of management for the past 10-odd years. If you want to talk the single greatest reasons why the Flames have been so damn mediocre for so damn long is the entrenched culture of skepticism towards unproven players. The more I think about it, the more zero in on Sutter's total refusal to put anyone in the lineup and now Treliving's shame-faced acknowledgement that the NHL level depth on this team frankly sucks.
You absolutely need youth and hunger in your lineup. It keeps everyone else honest. And youth and hunger is not necessarily a liability. I've been reading some analysis that young D are actually not any more prone to giveaways and turnovers than established D. It's just a full on NHL culture issue (again). NHL coaches are essentially the most conservative bioforms on the planet. Management has to force their hand to play unproven players.

And, Gawdin, Phillips, Dubé, Välimäki and Fox joining the Heat at the end of their season too!

I'm actually content not making the playoffs if our emphasis is developing our depth forwards. Quite frankly, I don't see us winning a cup this year and we desperately need about 4 of these prospects to take big steps forward to be successful. Bennett needs to become a top 6 player, Jankowski needs to become a solid 3rd line centre, and the bottom two lines need to be populated with faster, aggressive, and more offensively dynamic players.
I'd prefer that the franchise devout its energies to proper development than another 1st or 2nd round playoff exit.
