Weird as Sportsnet has shied away from mentioning CP for years. Even when Roger Millions did that segment from the bar that was literally set up as an evening between him and CP, sportsnet would not even mention CP in the broadcast.

Probably a slippery slope for sports media to be crediting fan forums for anything seeing one service is free and the other not. I imagine a lot in the media feel as paid professionals that they are above forum chatterers and don't want to be associated.
I went back to reading that thread, and I can't believe there were many who said the deal wasn't that bad. Such craziness as "addition by subtraction", "Ian White's young", "we added a combined 70 points in this deal" were being thrown around. At the time Phaneuf showed that he had promise though his ego was getting the better of him. You don't deal away assets like that for nothing. Certainly it worked out alright, but at the time Phaneuf should've returned more in a deal had Sutter shopped him around.

While the adage of team who gets the best player wins the deal is usually true, it was hard to predict that Hagman, White and Stajan’s careers would tank so fast.
Hagman and Stajan score at a 20g pace and White becomes a perennial 50 point defenceman and we probably are laughing about the trade.
I don’t really see how Phaneuf qualifies as an elite defenceman. He was on the path to becoming one, but he never got there. By the time he was dealt, he was a mediocre first pairing guy at best.

I like Stajan and what he brought to the Flames for most of his time here but he was essentially the return for Phaneuf. White played about 40 games as a Flame and Hagman just over a season. It's not as bad as the Gilmour trade but it's the 2nd worst trade in franchise history as the Flames traded at the time a top pairing defenseman for Matt Stajan and spare parts. Not exactly sure what Darryl was smoking that day but I wouldn't mind a puff of whatever that was.

Closing in on 1000 games played and 500 points. Say what you want about the guy but that's a very solid NHL career for a defensman.

Solid but not elite.
But the article addresses this. He was well on his way to being elite. At the time of the trade it wasn’t clear if he’d never reach his potential or even his previous levels of play or whether those successes were a flash in the pan and everything would be downhill from there.
I was surprised the flames werent able to get Iggy a number 1 centre with Dion. I had no qualms with trading him. In any event, I'd have Phaneuf over JayBo on my team any day of the week.

I actually think Reddit is a key source for journalists breaking stories these days. Its basically just crowd sourcing. I wouldn't be surprised if sports journalists lurk in these forums for story ideas and viewpoints.
Phaneuf started off his career as an elite defencemen - at least the ceiling he had was elite, and his production was elite. I remember one stat that stood out to me with regards to his start - something like: "Only Bobby Orr and Paul Coffey collected more points in their first three seasons in the NHL than Dion Phaneuf." He also played physical and was on track to be something very special. There were even some re-drafts in those three seasons with many people even outside Calgary saying he should have gone top 2 or 3 that year, perhaps even higher.
Dion just didn't develop after his tremendous start, so in hindsight, that trade wasn't so bad after all. It was absolutely horrid at the time based on value, however. It was definitely a poor value trade by Calgary at the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if they signed up anonymously and talked trash about their colleagues.
