A lot of people blasting Treliving for this trade.
My question, is it really that big a failure? Lazar gives energy but doesn't score any points. Plays a lot of games for us.
Isn't that still better than your average 2nd round pick?
Still some potential there, although how much remains to be seen.
I would say we can't stamp this as a TERRIBLE trade just yet.
Does a second round pick have waiver-exempt status through to 2022? Yes.
Does Curtis Lazar? No.
For that reason alone it was a brutal trade on Treliving's part, right there with the Hamonic trade and the Byron waiving and the Brouwer signing. And in retrospect, the Elliott rental should be added to that list considering it is Jordan Kyrou.

Lazar doesn’t really look like a NHLer to me. Plays immediately die on his stick and while it looks like he is gusting out there I don’t see anything that leads me to believe he is going t be in the league in 2 years.
2nd round pick might never play in the league but if the Flames were going to trade their next 3 2nd round picks maybe they should have saved last years instead of grabbing Lazar.
Having said that I was in immediate approval of the trade when it happened. Similar t Shinkaruk I remember Lazar having a lot of buzz prior to the 2013 draft and I hoped there was something there. Maybe there still is but I don’t see it
4 assists in 24 games and an ATOI of 9 mins and change... Have to admit I expected more at this point from the guy; only 19 shots and 42 hits through that span too and there is a lot to be desired in this trade.
Hopefully he can find his game again but at this point he's looking like a contract that won't get renewed when the time comes.
Lazar is now looking like he's a 4th line/fringe NHLer. A team should be able to fill those roster spots with their own prospects without trading a 2nd for them. Hathaway is proving to be a better player.
So yeah, gambled and lost on that 2nd.

I really like Lazar as a person, I think he’s a phenomenal interview as well. But as a player, he leaves a lot to be desired. I’ve said this before, but our pro scouting has been a failure. Very few hits and too many misses that have come back to hurt this team.
They targeted guys like Lazar, Brouwer, Bollig, Raymond, Hiller, Chiasson, F Hamilton, Elliott, Shinkaruk and etc while jettisoning useful guys like Paul Byron, Sven Baertschi, Markus Granlund and etc in the process is not a good track record nor does it give me a ton of confidence in our pro scouting department.

First of all, the Hamonic deal wasn't great but it's nowhere near as bad as the Brouwer deal.
Second, it's not fair to judge the trade based on who the other team selected as we have no eveidence to suggest that's the same player the Flames would have picked.

They wanted to keep Byron, and lost on the bet no one would take him. Baertchi made it clear he wouldn't re-sign here. Granlund has benefited enormously from a shallow Canucks lineup to showcase the only thing that keeps him in the NHL: his brain.
The other guys brought in either fulfilled their roles for a time, or were gambles good GMs take. No one can predict who's going to fall off, and no one is complaining about bets that paid off.

Don't forget the Gio signing until he's 39 years old.
