I know this is an unpopular opinion but not a fan of him punching him in the back of the head after he was down and his back towards him. Those shots could be deadly. There is a reason they are even banned in MMA.

Well in MMA they don't wear helmets. Also, I'm no doctor but you don't fracture someone's cheek bone by punching them in the back of the helmet.
Lastly, Brouwer needed to step up for the teams best player and let people know that just because he isn't chucking the knuckles every game, he is not going to stand by and watch players take liberties on Smith. And he did so with authority.
Unfortunate that Abdelkader was injured but perhaps he will think twice about getting in Smith's grill next time these teams meet.

I'm no doctor either but I'm pretty sure the cheek bone isn't in the back of the head to which my post was talking about.
I'm also not a scientist but I'm pretty sure his helmet fell off which is very common in hockey fights and he was punching him in the back of the head.

Watching the video again, Abdelkader's helmet doesn't come off until the refs jump in. Also, Brouwer doesn't actually get any face shots in unless he was throwing hooks from behind, which it doesn't look like either. The shots were directly to the back of the head, like you said, but his helmet remain on. Unless Brouwer was punching at the neck/base of the skull, Brouwer was getting all helmet.
Another thing, I can't see where Brouwer would have been able to fracture Justin's cheek.bone in that fight unless he was throwing hooks from behind to the side of the face. If that's actually the case, then your being bothered from hits to the back of the head aren't warranted because they perhaps weren't actually happening but the angle we get to see from give that impression that he was hitting him in the back of the head.. but I could be wrong.
But being wrong about that pint doesn't matter because the helmet stayed on until the refs jumped in.
Lastly, perhaps Abdelkader should turtle if he's going to try and start ****.

The first punch lands flush in the face and then Abdelkader starts turning away because he's hurt.

Punches to the back of the head are technically illegal in MMA but they hardly ever enforce this rule.

The first punch thrown was right on the left side of his cheek and it landed flush
If you dont want to be puched in the head dont make contact the goalie with your stick.
I don't want to sound condescending but has anyone even watched the video? Or what happened? Abdelkader was tripped and fell into the crease where his stick accidentally made contact with Smith.
Brouwer over reacted and as did Smith. This was not a "he stood up for his teammate moment" it was a dumb over reaction to a play that didn't need retribution. Stupid fight and a broken cheek bone to Abdelkader. Something he didn't deserve.
I know Brouwer is the CP Whipping boy but man he's doing his 4th line job. I don't like his contract but if he can contribute on the PK, 4th line duties. He's earned his spot on the team.
Well apparently I'm wrong. That's cool. I'm not too proud to admit when I'm wrong. I've gone back and watched the video a few times since and I don't know how I missed that first punch. And yes, that' completely explains why he turtled.
But my stance on the punches to the back of the head were hitting the helmet still stands.
If anyone is to blame it would be the refs. When you're in a fight unless you're a trained and disciplined fighter you're just gonna swing.
The second you see someone punching the back of the head the fight should be over.
Email it to the safety department!
