Jankowski, Jagr score first goals as Flames in 6-3 win over Red Wings
Between the two of them, Jaromir Jagr and Mark Jankowski have 767 National Hockey League goals.Jagr, after scoring his first goal with the Calgary Flames in Thursday’s 6-3 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings, has 766 of them.
Jankowski, the Flames’ five-year project and emerging young star, has the other, again in the team’s lastest victory.
After scoring, one player was trying to hide his Christmas morning-style grin, especially after hearing the Scotiabank Saddledome erupt like it did.
When is it time for Flames to start considering a Sam Bennett trade?
“Sam Bennett,” Glen Gulutzan said before the start of the regular season. “You look at the maturation of these players, and he’s had a good summer. I’ve talked to him a couple of times. So I think that’s the young guy that if I want a big leap, I’d pick him.”
The fourth overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft, Bennett has shown flashes of the potential he came to the NHL with, but has struggled with consistency. His career started with an 18-goal, 37-point season, but it’s been downhill ever since. Last season he dropped to 26 points and so far this season he’s pointless in 15 games.
So what’s going on with Bennett?
Flames call-up Jankowski anxious to earn more minutes
Over the past couple of weeks, he’s shared the ice with the starry likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin and the Sedin Twins.
He now has an all-timer, Jaromir Jagr, working on his right wing, and Jagr assisted Thursday on his first career goal.
But for Calgary Flames call-up Mark Jankowski, his this-is-primetime pinch-me moment was a sighting of another MVP.
Is there any room for Andrew Mangiapane on the Flames right now?
The bottom six isn’t scoring. But you know who is? Andrew Mangiapane.
Mangiapane, currently with six goals and 16 points over 12 games for the Stockton Heat, is the Flames’ farm team’s leading scorer – and third overall in the AHL. He may have relinquished his top status since being named the Player of the Month for October, but his 1.33 points per game is still one of the best rates among regular AHLers so far this season.
And the Flames could very easily open up a spot for him. Freddie Hamilton cleared waivers a week ago; while still up with the big club, the Flames could send him down at any time within the next three weeks and change, thereby opening a spot for Mangiapane.
Small in stature, Gaudreau has become the biggest piece of the Flames offence
Flames fans who were at the Don Hartman NE Sportsplex back in 2011 for Johnny Gaudreau’s debut at the Calgary Flames’ summer development camp likely still laugh when thinking back on their first glimpse.
He looked like a staff member’s kid invited onto the ice for a twirl with the rest of the prospects. He was swimming in his equipment. The Flaming C jersey went to his knees, billowing like a sail behind him and needing a tactical Gretzky tuck to keep it from dragging on the ice as he zipped around.
Even after seeing how quick and skilled he was in action with the other newbies, you’d be hard-pressed to find even one person who saw him there who truly believed he could become one of the most dynamic and exciting players at the National Hockey League Level.

Does anyone have pics of Gaudreau’s first appearance at rookie camp? It would be fun to look back on those.

Couldn’t find any on the ice but the Flames posted his headshot from 2011 back in September.
