Well I have finally booked a trip to Las Vegas with two other friends. We are going to be there the weekend of Nov. 10 - 13.
Just wondering if anyone has been there and seen any shows that are worth the $100 price tag...
ANy other sites or scences that are must sees while there?
Thanks for the help!

Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil. You'll want a rain coat if you sit up front for the BMG though.

Blue Man Group in the Luxor is worthwhile. So is the new Cirque De Soleil show in the MGM Grand (Ra?)
And if you're into Sci-Fi, you can't miss the Star Trek Experience in the Hilton, complete with having a drink in Quark's Bar B-)

Cirque de Soleil is definitely worth the money. Check online for any bands that will be in town as well.

I've been to Vegas a couple times, and among the still active shows, I saw Mystere (Cirque de Solieq). I heard from my mom that "O" was better.
The one I personally really wanted to see, as above, is Blue Man Group.

Great thread Fob. I'm headed to Vegas on October 13.
Have any of you guys who recommended Cirque de Soliel seen the Calgary show? Is it the same or roughly the same? I doubt I'll see more than one show (likely Blue Man) but after seeing just a glimpse of Cirque at the grandstand show at the stampede last year, I've wanted to see the whole show.
What is the Blue Man Group shw about? (Please tell me it's not like the Intel commercials).
And is it prudent to book in advance, or can we just pay at the door?

I have seen many shows in Vegas, ones I will recommend:
- Danny Gans (Best act in Vegas)
- Blue Man Group
- "O" (Cirque du Soleil)
- Mystere (Ciqure du Soleil)
Other ones I have seen that were alright:
- Zumanity (Ciqure du Solieil)
- Spash
- Tournament of Kings
Sigfried and Roy was also amazing ... but, u know.
The Ciqure de Soliel shows that have came to Calgary do not compare to the ones in Vegas.

At the risk of being contrarian...... I've been to Vegas about a dozen times over the last 15 years and without a doubt...
Blue Man Group is the biggest hunk of fataing crap I have ever seen. Its horrible and has no redeeming qualities.
OK, the long distance gumball catching is impressive but, since that happens in the first 10 minutes of the show, the rest is beyond terrible.
For awesome shows check out "O" by Cirque...its unlike most other Cirque shows and will take your breath away. Zumanity is also good.
If you're going with the wife/GF, Mama Mia is impossible for women not to love.
For a cheaper show, Comedy at the Tropicana is usually good.
For a local angle, check out Anthony Couls (ex-Calgarian) at the Paris. Its a great raunchy Hypnotist show.

Like I said in my post, Long distance gumball throwing is the 1st thing BMG does....this very impressive since the stage maybe 75 feet long? One blue man ends up with about 50 gumballs in his mouth at the end......cool.
The other parts of the show are crunching Captain Crunch cereal in synch for 15 minutes (amusing for the first 2 minutes) , blowing into PVC piping sections.....moving the sections around creates different sounds....this takes 20 minutes (amusing for the first 2 minutes). Then a person is taken (abducted) blindfolded from the audience and is followed backstage with a camera. This person is then dressed in a white jumpsuit and hung upside down....they are then painted in blue paint and "pendulumed" into a white piece of paper where they leave a blue "bodyprint"...this takes 20 minutes. (amusing for the first zero minutes). 20 minutes of the show is spent by the Blue Men asking for applause...also amusing for zero minutes. The grand finale is the entire audience getting toilet papered....lasts 10 minutes. This would have been amusing if there was ANY point to it. I may have missed 20 minutes while asleep....but, thats it in a nutshell.
"O" is incredible in that the performers are doing amazing acrobatics (like all Cirque shows) but are about 5 stories off the ground and hitting tiny water targets. the stage is something to behold in that it morphs from a stage into a lake and all things in between.
Zumanity is all about acrobatics, erotocism and has everything from girl on girl to guy on guy to midgets....add in a very cozy setting, lots of performer/audience interaction and humour and its a very good show. Only about 90 minutes long, though.

You completely missed the entire point of Blue Mans show if this is all you think about it. Its out there, I'll give you that, but you are the only person I have ever met who hated it. I've met people who thought it was all right, but 90% of people I have talked to about it were blown away.

Personal taste is kind of pointless to debate....I stand by my view of BMG. Just out of curiosity and to see what I missed....what was the point? BTW, pretty much the entire section that I was sitting in thought it was garbage.

I really want to see a cirque show. What I saw at the grandstand show in 2004 was amazing (homophobic people may not agree). Two dudes doing the most amazing balancing acts I've ever seen. Another thing that was amazing was this chick basically dancing in a hoop suspended above the stage. Really entertaining.
I've heard two sides to the blue man story. People either love it or hate it. I hate to sound finicky, but those Intel commercials used to p*ss me off because they wer so stupid. When I found out that those guys had a show in Vegas, I almost shat.
Contrary to my judging the book by it's cover, many people have heaped praise on the Blue Man Group show. But many have echoed GK's sentiments.
I think I'll play it safe & go see a cirque show.
Anyone know if I need to book in advance? I googled the o show & Bellagio is offering advance tickets. I don't know if that means I need to buy now. The reason why I don't want to buy in advance is because I going with 5 other guys & it's a bachelor party. We just don't know which night we're going to do what. Besides, I'm famous for not planning my trips. I hate itineraries. I hate having to be somewhere at a specific time.
|
Highly recommend reserving tickets for "O".....tough to find the night of. as a hint, you won't lose much in getting the cheapest seats for O or Zumanity as opposed to shelling out close to $100 more for the primo seats.

Championship boxing is exciting at the MGM Grand for example. There is probably a title bout there most weekends.
