Default Tell me about... Attic Insulation

So, I've put this off for a while and wondering if the CP braintrust has any experience either renting a machine and doing it themselves verses hiring a company come in and upgrade my insulation.

Mostly I'm thinking it's a good idea to try and take advantage of the energy rebate, but wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on it.

How old is your house? If it’s an older home be sure to check for vermiculite insulation. It contains asbestos but I think they stopped selling it in the 80’s.

I know people who have rented the machine and done it themselves. There are some things you have to know...more is not always better...leave room around the soffits for ventilation..don't pack it down. I would assume there are many more tips and tricks and must do's and don't's. But I don't see any reason not to do it yourself. Other than being in an attic sucks.

I did this with my brother in my old house. Not too hard, but it'll take a few hours, and one of you will be in the cramped attic.

It'll save you quite a bit of money though.

And have a cell phone or string or some system to communicate with the person running the machine while you're in the attic so you can tell them when to pause/stop the blower

Edit: or you'll end up in insulation up to your eyeballs

My local home centre owns the machine, they will rent it or come do the install. Was well worth the extra couple hundred they charged to let them do it. I did the prep, installed the baffles.

i don't know what rebates are around right now, when I did it I was doing the entire house so took advantage of some good rebates (energuide?), but to just do the one item the rebate wouldn't have been enough to force the change. Basically covers the taxes.

Check for vermiculite as previously stated, it's not a sky is falling scenario if it's there but best to let someone else do it if it's in there. You don't want to disturb it but nothing wrong with covering it. (but you will have to disclose it's presence on any future PCDS)

I used Elisamy Spray Foam & Insulation to upgrade both our house and garage with additional blown in. Jerald the owner was fantastic and did a great job for a very reasonable price on both.

Seeing how good a job he did and knowing how not-fun blowing that stuff in is, I was happy to pay a professional.

I got my attic insulation redone a month ago. It was $1100. AtticPros then sent pics and house dimensions to the Alberta energy rebate and I got a check yesterday for $680.

It's a no brainier right now.
