The Calgary Flames announced their opening day roster for the 2017-18 NHL season.
Today, the Flames assigned forward Mark Jankowski to the AHL's Stockton Heat and now have 23 players on their opening day roster. Forward Marek Hrivik will start the season on injured reserve.
So the Flames are going to be saddled with Freddie Hamiltion chewing up a roster spot until Dougie's contract is finished? What a joke, not much more Jankowski could have done

Jankowski earned a job, and they protected overpaid/under-achieving veterans, while also going out of their way to sign a guy who doesn't bring anything meaningful to 5v5 hockey.
You want someone who can hit? Get an effective NHL player who also happens to hit - not one who can hit and do nothing else.
Yeah, it's our 4th line, so the impact is hopefully minimal - but it's still a big failure by the organization, and a slap in the face to Jankowski.

I dont get the fear of waiving Stajan. No one will claim him and if they do, no problem. Why do we refuse to make our team better? We lead the league in "good guy in the locker room"

I'm convinced he hangs out in Calgary and is back on the roster by the weekend.
They might be able to keep him up for around for a day depending on flights, but the NHL does expect players assigned to the AHL team to actually go down.
I remember Darryl Sutter was asked about this before and he said that the league will check to see the team actually tried to send a player down.
Jankowski outplayed the bottom line and the extra forward easily. Victims of waiver exemption be damned. Treliving better get to work and make this guy a full time roster spot.

Meh, disappointed Janko won't start on Wednesday, but he'll be back soon. It is a long season...

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Looking for the same overreaction in this thread as there was back 9 years ago when preseason points leader Dustin Boyd got sent down in similar fashion.
The only explanation here is they are waiting for Space-X to gas up the rocket so they can fire one of Stajan, Hamilton, or Brouwer into the sun and open up a roster spot for the guy that actually earned the position.

Stockton doesn't play until Friday. Hathaway could be sent down then because of Jagr on Thursday and Jankowski emerges from his hiding spot.
Edit: And I forgot the Flames would still need to make a trade. Balls. Still, I think it happens.
