Default Did you apply for a student loan between 2000 and 2006?

If you did, your information may have been compromised.

Call 1.866.885.1866 to confirm.

I was informed that my information has been compromised.

And if anyone wants to know where this is coming from...

http://ca.reuters.com/article/domest...90F1LN20130116

Quote:
A Newfoundland lawyer said he will launch a class action lawsuit on Thursday against the Canadian government which lost a portable external hard drive containing the personal information of 583,000 Canada Student Loan borrowers.

The privacy breach, possibly the largest in Canadian history, affected students involved with the student loan program from 2000-2006. The external hard drive went missing on November 5 from a Quebec office.

The number is for HRDC, not the lawyer, if there is any confusion.

Weird that I got a letter today saying I still owed money on my student loans when I paid them off in full a while ago.

Yes - that number will tell you if your info was obtained.

On a side note: you can change a SIN #?

Ok just called, and they confirmed my info has been breached.

They stated calling 1-800-o-canada and stating the breach of my SIN and to request monitoring for fraudulent behaviour.

Just called. The guy I talked to had no idea about the theft, let alone SIN monitoring.

He told me to call the student loans number.

If they lost my info why would I call them to remind them that I owe them money?

Do you understand the severity of personal information being compromised? Forget that, actually, do you even get what was said in the original post?

What is the concern here that someone can use the information to steal your identity?

Isn't this all info thieves could get a number of other ways?

Compromised not lost, HRDC has your info and so does someone else, potentially.

First thing that I thought of when I heard the story. Good luck robbing those broke graduates.
