I gave my brother my 1979 Sunbird a few years ago. Now he has a BMW and the bird is in my back alley. It has to go! In order to kill two birds with one stone, I had the following idea:
Drive the sunbird as far south as it can go before it conks out, take a vacation at said conk out spot, then fly back. My wife thinks I am a nutbar and refuses to have anything to do with the idea.
I have now refined the plan.
1. Drive to Schweitzer or Whitefish, ski for a day
2. Continue on to Phoenix for Flames game.
3. Leave car or sell to scrap metal man
4. Fly home on westjet
Does this sound like fun or am I really a nutbar?

Breathalyzer tests should be used before posting...
I think it'd be cool going all the way south for a game. See Gretz coach, and be the only guy in a red jersey...

I like your plan; sounds reasonable and well thought out.
Okay tell me if I am daft:
1. Finish class on a Friday
2. Rent a car in Kingston and drive down to Pittsburgh the next day to see the Flames
3. Go see the Bengals play the Steelers the next day
4. Drive back and write a 100% final exam in tax law three days later

Er, what happens if it conks out before Schweitzer. I wouldn't wanna be stuck on the Koocanusa in the middle of the winter in a car that you expect to conk out. That's bad Karma. I also wouldn't wanna get stuck in the middle of the desert either. If you go, bring some rollerblades.

There is no test on earth that would stop me from making that road trip....ESPECIALLY Tax Law.
There's only so much you should know about Tax Law. Even if you don't know some of the answers, just fill-in-the-blank with "This shinguard is boring!"

That sounds good, but I've got a better one.
Fly to New Jersey
Drive to Pittsburgh
Watch the flames play the penguins
Next day watch Bengals/Steelers
Next day drive to Philly watch Eagles/Seahawks on NMF!!!
Next day watch Flames Flyers
Next day drive back to Jersey to watch Flames/Devils
Next two days do it up NY style
Catch the Oilers Islanders game no Saturday (Long way to go to hate on the Oilers but why the hell not)
Next day catch Raiders/Jets
next day Fly home exhausted!
Now that is a crazy road trip.

Regarding the original trip, I'm curious if you'd run into problems at the border.
Then it becomes a question of what vehicle disposal laws are down there. I know of people who went through heck trying to get a newer car registered down there; would junking it be considered "selling" it to the junkyard? Would a junkyard owner get in trouble for "importing" a vehicle?
9 out of 10 for style, for sure though. Myself, I had always talked about taking a weekend in March and keeping driving south until I found a golf course that was open.

At the very least you should drive it to your brother's house and put it in his back alley.
I think your idea is a good one. Sounds like fun but there has to be some legal mumbo-jumbo about disposing a car in the States. The guy at customs on the way back would be a little concerned (hopefully) if he sees you've just left a car somewhere in the United States.

What a good point. I wonder if you could just tell them that you gave it to a friend? Assuming that the junkyard isn't allowed to buy it (or is financially discouraged) of course.
That aside, this sounds like fun; for a couple of guys. I can understand why your wife isn't digging out the suitcase. The female translation is something like: "Let's get into an ugly old beater, drive aimlessly, wait for the car to break down, and hope that it happens near civilization.".

You need to quit classifying all females like that. My translation would be "Right on! When do we leave? I hope we break down in the middle of nowhere so we can explore shinguard!"
But then, I'm not normal. :P

Well that was more or less the plan until I picked up tax.

Why wouldn't you just tell them that it broke down and you can't wait around for it to get repaired?
Or just tell them it was stolen.

ok, i am actually seriously thinking of doing this now. To reply to some of the ideas:
1. Bring Back S: good trip but it leaves me with my car still in my alley
2. Red Gaunch: too logical, although leaving it in my brothers alley does seem simpler than my plan. You are S.M.R.T !
3. problems with disposal: I believe cars older than 4 years can be bought/sold with no issues under NAFTA agreement. The buyee would have to prove it met emissions. Hah! his problem.
4. Firefly: interesting
5. Car conks out too soon: crap. I'll bring some tools and duct tape I guess

We drove to phoenix and on the way back our van died in Vegas, we sold it to a junkyard for $200 and rented a car to great falls and then rented another van we had to take back to great falls.

Give the car to charity, get a tax receipt, buy a round-trip plane ticket to the Grand Canyon, rent a car there, push it over the cliff thereby realizing KevanGuy's dream, then explore shinguard with Firefly because your wife wouldn't go.
