So much for the Devils clearing all that salary.

That's a fairly reasonable contract, I gotta say.

7M/yr for Shattenkirk is crazy.

Glad we weren't in on that one. I don't consider Shattenkirk in the same range of Doughty or Letang, yet he's getting paid like it.

That is almost the same AAV for Hamonic and Stone combined. Well done Tre!

Almost $7 mil AAV for Shattenkirk is way too much. Like about $2 mil too much.

Just gross. They got lucky with the term but he's nowhere near a $7 million defenseman. He was flat out terrible for the Capitals.

Wow. This is totally fair. It's the term that makes it easy to swallow... he's going to be a top pairing guy for four years. I expected 6.5 x 6 or 7 years, so on a four year deal, this is actually about as good as you could possibly expect.

No it's not. Shattenkirk is NOT worth almost 7 mil a year. He's not good defensively at all and he's not good enough offensively to be worth that much coin.

Actually, he's better defensively than offensively, and he's very good at both. Usually, it takes a longer term to get a top pairing defenseman who's under 30 years old in free agency. It's a UFA premium on the AAV but not a huge one... If Subban's worth 9 million (and I think he is), Shattenkirk's worth this.

Haha, Stone is a terrible contract and this is fair....Shattenkirk went from being a solid number 4 on the Blues to this.

That's a lot of money but the term is about right. Surprised he signed for 4 years. I expected 6 minimum.

Totally agree as he's not very good at all. So far this is the front runner for worst contract of free agency but the term may save them ultimately.

Weekes may have jumped the gun:

Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Talked to Shattenkirk camp. He hasn't decided where he will sign yet, reports otherwise are premature.

Term is right, but cap hit too high. Shattenkirk seems to be to be a guy who needs a good partner/sheltering, not a true #1 guy. Glad the flames aren't shopping for D on the UFA market, prices get ridiculous
