Kings sign former Flames draft pick Stepan Falkovsky
Flames did not give him a bonafide offer and didn't retain his rights. Became a free agent. Some issues apparently behind the scenes.
Jon Rosen @lakingsinsider
now
Kings sign free agent defenseman Stepan Falkovsky, from Belarus, to a three-year ELC. 32 points (21-11=32) w/ ECHL-Adirondack in 16-17.

So very curious to know what the reasoning behind this was.

5% chance of being a very good defencemen. Wonder if the behind the scene issues are personal or contract based?

That's sucks! He might not be on the top 5 prospect defensemen for the Flames but he is improving. I was hoping we could have seen more of him.

It's weird how a 2016 pick became a UFA so quickly.
Also, that's too bad.

He had to be given a bona fide offer in June for the Flames to retain his rights. This is true for all CHL draft picks and is usually a formality, which is why we never hear about it.
Obviously, the Flames didn't give him one. He was in the organization all last season, so I'm sure they had their reasons.

What I don't get is that he was playing pro last year - how does he do that without a contract?

He was signed to an AHL deal only. Not an NHL deal. I think it is rare for a NHL draft pick to play in the AHL with out a NHL deal but it is possible.

I'm assuming the Flames moved on because of the log jam they have at D prospect-wise?

Would like to know the reasons he didn't get an offer, too.
Disappointing considering he showed some real offensive ability in the ECHL this year and was hoping he'd graduate to Stockton. Flames don't have a lot of big d-men with ability -- this was one of them.

Decent AHL team but this is now two years in a row a team has just walked away from him (junior team didn't keep him or find a spot him and now the Flames). Makes you wonder if there is something going on here.

I guess they didn't want to commit to a 3 year entry deal for a long shot. I suspect if they could have signed him to a one year deal they would have.
