Nice deal. Might as well take less for a solid chance at a ring.

Probably end up on the waiver wire. Tristan Jarry most likely a better goalie than Niemi at this point. But good to push the kid in training camp.

So let me get this straight…

The Penguins are paying Niemi $700,000 for one year to play for them.
The Stars are paying him $1,500,000 for two years to play against them.

All righty then.

If only the Stars could ensure that he would actually play against them, it might not be such a bad situation!

I thought he's been playing against the Dallas Stars for the past 2 seasons...

It confuses me how/why buyout players later sign lowball offers.

Niemi is at least the same level as Chad, Nilsson, and all the other available backups. Yet those backups are getting 1-3M.

Do all the GMs collude together?

Niemi wasn't even close to level with Johnson or Nilsson last season. He is coming off a 3.30 GAA and .892 sv% and his season before wasn't much better.

Signing with the Pens gives him a chance to reserect his career playing 20 games on the best team in the league. If it works out he can sign a Johnson or Nilsson contract next year.

They are signing FMV deals, as they stink.

If you include the money Dallas is paying him for the buyout he is making $2.2 million this upcoming season.

Niemi is what he is. I don't think he is a great goalie, but put him in front of a good defensive team, and he will be 'fine'. I remember him changing the perception of goaltending (at least among fans) after Chicago won the cup with him.

"You don't need a high end goalie to win", "teams should not spend that much on goaltending, but instead load up on defence"...

I don't think most teams felt the same way, but I remember some analysts bringing that up often as well.

Now we have come full circle, and teams are desperately trying to find that elite goalie, and don't mind paying big bucks.

For 700k, I think Niemi should be a reliable backup for a good team. Or so the Pens hope.

Hmm Dan Girardi got paid pretty significantly. Plus, he is still getting paid by the Rangers. Not a bad deal for him.

Mostly, teams don't buy out players that are playing well, so that's why they take a haircut to go somewhere else.

I'd have Niemi a whole tier below the guys you mentioned. I think he's among the worst goalies in the NHL at the moment. Pretty terrible numbers last year, like Hiller bad. I'm almost surprised he's back in the NHL, usually you'd expect a goalie to just go back to Europe after a year like that.
