"Aside from having a slick Flames Starter jacket and a Mike Vernon Starting Lineup toy, I really had no connection to the team. So, how did I know Al MacInnis possessed a slap shot that could shatter glass? How come I was able to list his teammates — Gary Suter, Theo Fleury, Gary Roberts, and Joe Nieuwendyk — without a second's worth of hesitation? How did I know that Winnipeg and Edmonton were the big rivals in the Pacific Northwest? NHL 94 That's how."
I love that video game

Wow... Trip down memory lane...
The first video game I ever saved up for & bought was 'Blades of Steel'.
I wonder if my Nintendo is still kicking around the old man's basement.
EDIT:
Hey! The filter eliminates unnecessary spaces? I left an extra couple of spaces between 'blades' and 'of'. I can't even say that title out loud without the pause.

Galaga was my favourite back in the 80's.

I recently brought my Commodore 64 back into the light of day. Started playing favourites like Jumpman, Raid Over Moscow, Gyrus, and Forbidden Forest.
But I recall one of the NHL games- circa 1995 where it would remember a player's stats, and adjust his performance accordingly. We had Gretzky win 100 consecutive fights to become the biggest goon in the league.

Haha, I still have that game today. I remember it well - all you have to do is go behind the net, wrap around the front and hit the far corner to score. Simple as pie.

Blades of Steel was a great game. I'm somewhat sad that Punch-Out lost to NHL '94 but that one's a monster in it's own right, however diluted and popularized by year after year of sequels.

Blades of Steel was the best. The NHL should go to the five point fighting system.
Though not involved in this one, Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 was the best baseball game ever. Nothing like special abilities, like a missile that took any fielder trying to catch a ball to the OF wall.
edit: yeah, I remember Ice Hockey. A team made up completely of Tkachunk's was downright hilarious.

Nintendo: Contra - that game was legendary..... up up, down down, left right, left right, a-b, a-b, start!
Super Mario is close after that.
Atari - Pitfall, although River Raid was pretty good too.
After that, most modern consoles seem to produce a whole lot of good games, too many to play and give the rank of legendary. Perhaps I just ran out of time as life went on but I just didn't seem to play the crap out of games on the modern consoles.
Although BF2 is currently giving that a run....

I loved the good old days where the most complex button combination used on a controller was 'hold b... and move' to run fast. 10 seconds tops to learn a new game, unlike all this x, r, white button, double joystick garbage seen nowadays that baffles the hell outta me.
Definitely think Mario and Ninja Turtles for original nintendo are great games. Older NHL games were also pretty enjoyable as well. Anyone remember 'Stanley Cup Hockey' with the bug that let you flip the puck from the blue line over the tenders head into the net? Many, many two-player 30-29 games were enjoyed at the expense of that gem they let slip by...
Nowadays, Counter-Strike takes the cake IMO. So incredibly simple yet so incredibly addicting. Buy gun. Use gun to kill enemies. Killing enemies gets you money. Use money to buy better gun. Use better gun to kill enemies more effectively. And so forth...

Those hockey games were the greatest but what makes '94 stand out over the rest of them? Weren't they virtually the same except for the stats?
I'm not sure what year it was but I swear Kirk Muller was the best player in the whole game one season. He could not be knocked down.
Tony Hawk has to get honorable mention as well. The sun came up and surprised me a few times after I turned that game on at 7pm.

Aye on the Tony Hawk. Tony Hawk 2 was also fantastic.
We had a Contra competition in grade 12 one year. My friend won beating it with a time of 13 minutes something seconds. It was a feat. I think that could be a world record honestly.

Wasnt it:
up up, down down, left right, left right, B-A, start!
There may have been a select in there too.
Ahhh... those are good memories.
How many Nintendo controllers did people wreck playing Track and Field? I myself wrecked 4. I used a thymbol on my middle finger, tightened up my fingers, and moved them back and forth over the button as fast as I could.
My favorite Nintendo game would be Legend of Zelda.
My favorite game of all time would be either Civilization or the original Sid Mier's Pirates from the late 80's. Oh, dont forget the Ultima 7 series.
I could go on forever....

Zelda 64, the first one, got the same reaction out of me. Hell, Mario for Super Nintendo did too when it came out...

Yes Zelda 64 was incredible. I wasted most of my grade 8 life on that game.
