Time wasting topic . . . . . Boston Globe - a rather strange source to do this - compiles a detailed and lengthy list of the top 50 science fiction programs of all time. Hit the "previous" button to go down the list.
http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/gallery/topscifishows?pg=50
Number one, of course, is the original Star Trek. The new Battlestar Galactica slides in a number 2, Star Trek, Next Generation is third, X-Files is number 4, Babylon Five is fifth, Stargate is sixth . . . . "Lost" comes in at 11.

List seems to favor Cheesy shows like Stargate, Babylon 5 (yuck) and Sliders. Futurama, Buffy should be higher as should Firefly (though probably not on long enough). And the original Twilight Zone should be top 3.
And where the fata is Starman - The Series. That was awesome!

Did I just miss it, or was Deep Space Nine nowhere to be seen on the list? And Voyager in the top 20...wtf is that?
In terms of influence, it's no surprise that the original Star Trek is number one, but I think most sci-fi buffs agree that The Next Generation proved to be the better series overall.
Other really noticable absences: Lost in Space and The Prisoner.

Lost In Space is on the list.
Star Trek DS9 is not.
I have some of the Flash Gordon serials from the 1950's on DVD and let me tell you, that is one awful show . . . . so much so that its great for comedy. Can't believe its on the list.
Loved Babylon Five!!!

Must have missed Lost in Space. It's very shocking that Voyager ranked #14 and DS9 was completely absent, though. Does anyone (other than this list's writers, apparently) like Voyager better than DS9?

I didn't like DS9 at all . . . . and while I wasn't a gigantic fan of Voyager, I'd certainly put it higher than DS9.
Everyone has an opinion of course.

I never really liked either of them. TNG is where it's at. If Battlestar Galactica is rated above TNG, maybe I'll have to check that show out.
Anyone know when it's on?

Some controversy about that as USA viewers are already well along on season two and Canadian viewers are still waiting to see a repeat of season one.
Here is the Space.com schedule for Canada. They'll be broadcasting the two part mini-series first, then season one, then season two:
Part 1 Mini-series: Saturday, October 8 th, 2005 at 9pm EST
Part 2: Sunday, October 9 th, 2005 at 9pm EST
Battlestar Galactica (Season One) has its first SPACE Encore Presentation starting on Saturday, October 15 th, 2005 at 8pm EST
Battlestar Galactica (SEASON TWO) has its Canadian Television Premiere exclusively on SPACE starting on Saturday, January 14th, 2006 at 8pm EST
There's a trailer at this link but its a spoiler if you haven't seen it yet:
http://www.spacecast.com/bsg/
The Sci-Fi channel in the USA is up to date on season two episodes and a preview of the season two summer finale.

I have the mini-series, season one, and 9 eppies of season dl'd and ready to watch. I have two eppies of S1 to watch left, and I am thoroughly hooked. Sure not used to seeing that much nooky going on in a sci fi show. Batlle scenes seem more gritty to me, and I love the fact Adama is a hard ass.

DS9 was far and away my favorite Star Trek. It wasn't this nice candy-coated future where everything was just lovely. There were not a whole lot of shows where the holographic doctor goes down to a planet and sings to a culture that knows nothing about music. It was the darkest of them all, and that edge on Star Trek was great.

No Prisoner? Come on that was a great show. Also Highlander. That should be there. I liked DS9 better than Voyager especially near the end when it was about the war with the whatchamacallit.

Umm, anybody ever heard of a little show called MANIMAL?
And what about Alf? Or Knight Rider? No respect at all for the 1980s on that list.

Thank the Lords of Kobol for bittorrents!
Season 2 has been awesome; even better than season 1. Really, there hasn't been one bad episode yet. For those of you who can't wait til October to catch season 1 on Space, the DVD, which includes the miniseries and tonnes of extras is out as of Tuesday

Sonofamother. Looks like the VCR is going to have to play a hand in any BG I watch. The programmers at Space really should be thinking about ME a little more. Don't they know that I watch HNIC on Saturdays?
I'm writing a letter.

I think you'll find they will replay the episode on Sunday's at about 4 p.m. MST. . . . that's what they did last year when they first aired it.

You know, DS9 is my second favorite after the Original Series. Sisko started out weak, but ended up being such a cool captain...
Frankly, I think if they had the technology for TOS, it would've had more explosive conflicts... I mean, the original Star Trek was pretty dark sometimes, despite the happy music and occasional lowbrow joke at the end...

Hey, how can they include all those campy/crappy superhero shows (that Batman is the lamest thing ever) and ignore the one and only Incredible Hulk? Hulk SMASH Boston Globe!

Remember Starlost, a Canadian show?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starlost
The Starlost was a Canadian-produced science fiction television series devised by writer Harlan Ellison and broadcast in 1973 on CTV in Canada and on NBC in the United States.
It was about a multigenerational ship lost in space, whose inhabitants had forgotten that they were on a ship. However the production of the show had many difficulties, and Ellison ended up disowning the show before the first episode even aired.
And, Space: 1999?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_1999
Space: 1999 was the first attempt since the demise of Star Trek in 1969 at producing a large-scale weekly science fiction series, and the show drew a great deal of visual inspiration (and technical expertise) from the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The show's special effects director Brian Johnson had in fact previously worked on both Thunderbirds (as Brian Johncock) and 2001.

Hoo-rah for 'SPACE: Above And Beyond'
A great but shortlived show that Fox pulled the plug on due to production cost overuns
