2 Calgarians Combine For 2,801 Airplane Complaints
Don't people have better things to do with their lives??
Quote:
Last year, a single Calgarian complained to the Calgary Airport Authority 1,707 times about aircraft noise.
That's, on average, almost five phone calls or online submissions to the airport authority every single day, to vent about the sound of planes.
Another resident voiced concerns 1,094 times last year— almost three times per day, on average.
Together, those two people made up nearly half of the 6,458 noise concerns the Calgary Airport Authority tallied in all of 2016.
In an annual update to city council, Bob Sartor, CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, said even with frequent complaints from eight people, including the two people who complained more than 1,000 times each, the total concerns about aircraft noise decreased 39 per cent last year.

I'm assuming that said complainants actually looked at the houses and realized that there was an airport nearby before they bought them.
Why I couldn't work at a complaints line. Because I can't generate sympathy for whiners.

Flight routes change.
Not sure if that matters for these complainers or not.
In my personal case, we bought in SE Airdrie before the new runway opened up. Then when it opened we get a lot of large aircraft on their descent at all times of day. Was annoying for the first night because I woke up since I wasn't used to it. Since then, meh. Sleep like a baby.
It's entertaining when the NIMBYs go on the news ever few years and complain "I bought a house in the NW/SW so I should never hear airplane noise. Those peasants in the NE should expect it though"

It is people like this who brag to their friends about a great deal they got on their home in one sentence but then complain about the airport in another as if the airport magically popped up one morning or the assumption was the airport was going to get smaller and less busy.

Every situation is different based on flight paths and as I posted in another thread, the flight zones are massive but to be as close to the airport as some of the communities with high complaints are and believe something needs to be changed is absurd IMO.
It would be like someone moving downtown and complaining about hearing road noise and expecting someone to do something about it for me.

This is no suprise whatsoever. There really are some folks out there who have nothing better to do than to complain to the authorities about something grinding their gears.

We have a very large area map here at the base and it has sensitive citizens, livestock, etc marked on it as we do a lot of low level nav trips. DND is fairly accomodating and tries to avoid anyone who has requested/complained about the noise. Nothing wrong with being a good neighbor when you can. We did have someone shooting at our Tutors on occasion many many years ago.
Obviously not relevent to what's going on at a city airport, though. Lol.

it would be interesting to know more about he complainers.....did they just move in? have they historically complained a lot? has there been any changes at the airport that meant more noise over their homes?
otherwise, I am assuming that this has gotten tot eh point of them just calling the number and say "noise complaint" and then hang up.

The rest probably gave up after realizing that complaints are auto-deleted from the system so the airport authority doesn't have to deal with them.

Do these guys live in my apartment building, and leave passive aggressive notes under my door telling me not to climb the stairs so loudly?

I think when they changed flight paths a few years ago the number of complaints probably went way up. I noticed a huge increase in plane noise, and live in the NW, very far from the airport. You kind of get used to it over time, but it wasn't like that when I bought the house, and the airport is over 15 km away.

After a thousand calls, they should be arrested for harassment, lol. You basically have to hire a ft guy to handle these calls from two people!

There is no point in these complaints. It's like yelling at the highway 300 metres from your house. Neither the highway now the airport are going anywhere.
