Ducks Could The Wideman Effect™ move on to Anaheim? Vermette ejected for slashing official

Uh oh, someone hurt a referee again. And it's another pretty clean player with little history: Antoine Vermette from the Ducks.

Could we see another 20-gamer out of this?

Bieksa's reaction when the ref explains the call is great.

Not nearly as much room for debate in terms of intent as there was with Wideman. Of course, there isn't a juicy gif to get replayed on US tv, so the league probably won't care very much.

The overhead shot at 1:51 is pretty damning...that wasn't exactly a love tap.

Posted in the OOT that I think he should get what Wideman got which is 10 games. Result isn't as bad as Wideman but in my mind there's no question about intent here. 10 seems fair to me.

It is the NHL, probably won't get anything.

I agree with the announcers, I can't believe what I just saw.

He gave a ref a chop for not dropping the puck right?

H'what?

Did he claim he wasn't responsible? I imagine he owned it after the game and will accept his ounishment

What an idiot.

Hopefully the Ducks will do the dumb thing and drag this out for months like Wideman and the PA did.

Take your medicine and stay home. You don't give a linesman a two-hander.

Sounds like the most likely scenario is an automatic 10-game suspension.

Yeah that's messed up.

Another thing that bugs me about the NHL is the faceoffs. Although Vermette is just being a violent 3yr old there, it's very frustrating how the linesman like to play these silly little games with the puck drop. I hate all the fakes and jerks just to kick someone out of the circle. And right there the linesman clearly handed the puck over to the Wild.

Well, actually the ref did drop the puck middle of the face off dot, vermette was standing pretty far away, should blame himself.

To me it looked like Vermette went in with his stick down when the linesman indicated a drop but the linesman delayed and waited until Vermette lifted his stick off the ice before throwing it down. It looked like he sabotaged the puck drop for the Ducks

Back when I played rinky dink community level 2 midget hockey or whatever we encountered a similar situation. Well not that similar but for some reason this video reminds me of it. We were winning and the other team was pissy or something. Who knows why, people in Canada get weird with hockey.

Anyway towards the end of the game one of the other teams players gets a penalty and I remember it being for sure warranted. The ref for our game had to be nearing in on 90 years of age or so. Think skeletor on skates. He puts this guy in the box and this player is having basically a temper tantrum. So given there's 30 seconds left and we're up by 3 goals and, what I assume, this old man is tired of listening to this idiot rant and rave, yelling and swearing at him. So, the ref basically just says #### it and calls the game. Blows the whistle points to our bench and says fine they win, whatever.

Wellllllllll. Wouldn't you know. Mini-Antoine Vermette comes storming out of the box and literally launches his stick at this referee!! I swear to god it was insane! As if it was a spear. Just two hand spear throws his stick. The entire rink had jaws dropped. It was hilariously not close. Like it was definitely at him, but missed by a solid few feet.

The moments after that were for pay per view only. Fan fights, police escorts. Just a #### show. Good times in our low-level hockey tier. What a maniac. I bet that guy's in jail now.

Another player did something like this recently who wasn't Wideman but I can't remember. A young guy just after a fight was being pushed away by the ref. The ref was holding his arms and the player broke free by chopping at the refs hands.

Who am I thinking of?

Peca got 5 games for grabbing a refs arm. I hope this one gets 20 and drags along like the Wideman saga.

Exactly. It is category 2 so it should be 10 games. Let's see if they get it right, I am betting they won't.

It should be 10 games but Wideman's was more vicious and dangerous. This is just a flick of the stick, not likely to do any major damage. Wideman's was a full on hit from behind near the boards.
