That was the most atrocious broadcast of a historic moment I've ever seen, lol. Those guys on the Penguins broadcast just screamed and shouted about how exciting it was during the entire standing ovation with the crowd on mute.
Then when the crowd gave an extra standing ovation at the end they played replays over top of them. They didn't let the crowd take over for one second of it.
The fewest number of NHL games required to reach the mark was 424, set by Wayne Gretzky. Second quickest was Mario Lemieux, achieving the mark in his 513th game. In a sense, Gretzky was the fastest and the second fastest, as he scored his second 1,000 points (the only player ever to reach 2,000 points) only 433 games after scoring his first 1,000 points.

It's hard to even comprehend, and I was around when it happened. Being in my teens, it didn't really sink in how amazing that was. Plus the over-riding hate of all things Oilers.

Wow! Those Gretzky stats are simply incredible. I'm having a "I'm old and reflecting back at what I've seen" moment.
Unbelievably, Gretzky had TWO Thousand points in 857 games. Mario took 513 game to get 1000 points. Crosby took 757 for his first thousand. Ovechkin took 880, Sedin took 1213 games.
For Gretzky to get points 1001-2000 faster than Mario got 1-1000 is completely astounding.
Back in the day, I should've spent more time admiring Gretzky than hating him for being an Oiler. I remember fear everytime he got the puck, even if it happened to be behind his own icing line. It was "Oh no, they're going score". Hated the Oilers then as much now, and it blanketed my Great One experience too!
