wow that's as dirty as it gets. Hope the league throws the book at him.
The league has set a precedent that they aren't tough on anyone unless it's a goon, then they send a message.
If you're objectively looking at the sheer carelessness and viciousness of that incident, it's easily worth 15+ games, and I wouldn't disagree with a 25-30 game suspension to say "Don't you or anyone in this league even think of taking a swing at someone's face like that again".
However, I would be blown away if this was more than a 5 game suspension, that's just how they operate.

Not sure what he was trying to do there. Not really a dirty player and clearly looked concerned the second it happened. Whether it was an accident or a temper tantrum though, you have to control yourself and your stick. Should be 5+ games.

It's pretty crazy that if that stick hits an inch or two up and takes out an eye we would immediately be witnessing one of the worst incidents in NHL history and Nyquist would be looking at a career threatening suspension. The NHL is completely injury and star player vs non star player driven with suspensions.
Probably gets one or two. Seemed more like a careless jab than an intentional stick to the face.
Reminded me a bit of the Keith/Carter incident, and in both cases they seemed remorseful immediately after.
Vicious high stick, one of the worst I've ever seen. So very lucky Spurgeon didn't lose an eye. That could have been so much worse then what it was. In Nyquist's defence, you could see the immediate regret in his body language, and I think he just snapped for a half second. But it still doesn't excuse his actions.

Nailed my thoughts as well. Looked like it very well could have been an accident, and his body language to me said "Oh crap, sorry!" But either way you need to control your stick and/or emotions better than that. 7 ish games wouldn't seem unreasonable

He might have accidentally hit him in the face near the eye. He didn't accidentally swing his stick in the general direction of someone's head.
Violent stick infraction to the head? If the league is serious about supplemental discipline it should be 10+ games easily. No excuse for that kind of stick swinging.

I know this is going to sound terrible, but I wouldn't mind Gaudreau losing it and doing something similar. I know it's wrong and dirty, but guys going to hit or slash him might second guess that decision if they think that he might haul off and slash them in the face.

Bad idea. They'll gleefully do it if he loses control like that and earns himself a multi-game suspension. A few extra whacks and crosschecks when the ref isn't looking sure, but certainly not something on this level.

I would absolutely be bothered by Gaudreau doing crap like this. No place in the game for it, you get whacked on the hands at the very most whack him on the hands back, not a selfish dangerous play like going for his face. That'd be a quick way for me to despise Gaudreau if he started doing what you say he should. Ridiculous.
