Default Making the playoffs, will it hurt in the long run

We are right in there battling for a playoff spot but will it be worth to make the playoffs? What is the point of making the playoffs and getting bounced in the first round because with out current goaltending we probably won't get far.

This team has lot's of holes that need to be filled and it would be better by trading away expiring assets, rather than to hold on to them for the playoff push. Let's say that we are in the same place as now come trade dead line, would it be better to trade all our expiring UFA's for pick which can be used to fill in the holes that are needed to be filled. This will hurt now because we will miss the playoffs but in the long run, it would benefit this team a lot.

We trade all our UFA's for picks, than use those picks for a true # 1 goalie, a good #3-4 D man and a true top 6 Forward(RW). Would this not benfit the team more than making the playoffs for one year and getting bounced in the first round?

Totally worth getting in the dance. The more guys (especially the younger ones) with playoff experience now will pay dividends later. Plus the playoffs are a funny thing, we all remember '04

No, as long as we're in it we should push for the play-offs.

Do you really think we'd get your whole shopping list just from picks we obtain by trading the expiring UFAs? That seems overly optimistic bordering on naive.

I think an argument could be made for that in 2015 but I think they're at the point now where they need to show progress. I'm fine with them missing the playoffs this year as long as they're in the hunt until the very end. If they don't make it next year I will be severely disappointed. It's easy to fall into the trap that so many teams have fallen into where you never make the playoffs because you never progress.

There's also a lot to be said about experience. I know the season series didn't go so well but our young guys have been to the playoffs. I think they'd bounce the Oilers because they know what it takes to win a round. They don't know what it takes to win a cup yet, but they have that experience. They have a ton of great young talent. It's up to Brad to compliment them and I think so far he's done a good jo of that, but he's not done yet.

What UFA's do we have that would bring much of anything? Both goalies have struggled,Versteeg might land you a 3rd but the rest have negative value.

Even the NJ Devils made the finals 4 seasons ago. The NJ Devils.

With how much the west has dropped off since 2 seasons ago, you can't say anything for sure. What if the Flames sneak into WC2 and draw the Wild? They've played them really well this season. The Sharks and Hawks too. The closest thing to a sure 1st round exit is the Ducks and that matchup is unlikely.

It's always good for a team/franchise to make it. There's no way to out-suck COL and ARI at this point, and Vegas is guaranteed a high pick. Draft isn't elite. So what's the point of not going for it?

The team will always push to win.

How will the team know when it's worth the effort to even bother getting into the playoffs?

I thought we were supposed to tank this season, right Par? Or is Ol' Scorpy's mind playing tricks on him?

Nope. http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=154457

I never did say anything about tanking, it was asset management and hopefully getting a new coaching staff.

You didn't, eh? Really?

Ignoring the title of the thread I linked to for a moment, let's break down the OP in said thread.

It would hav been nice had we gotten a top 3 pick(it stings so much), the player we did with 6th pick, he probably won't make it to the NHL for least another, would you guys be Gabor of tanking and getting another top player in the 2016-17 draft, it is not that we are going to Stanley Cup favourites any time soon.
I don't know what the word 'Gabor' is doing in there, but regardless, there it is. Unless that somehow isn't about intentionally losing hockey games?

You literally said "tanking" in the first post of a thread you created titled "Tank this coming year?"

Par you seem to be a very young Flames fan. Back to your question you choose to make the playoffs all day everyday. The players you mentioned won't get you anything and this draft is looking like garbage.

This is true. But regardless of your age, it is important to realise that it really isn't typically a good idea to miss the playoffs, intentionally or not. If you can make the dance, make it.

I'm a pretty young guy as well, at least for this board. Don't feel overwhelmed by posters who pile onto you. I apologise for bringing your previous thread into this one.

No worries, I really want to make the playoffs but if we loose in the first round it kind of sucks and part of me really torn at what the team up North is doing, if we kick them out of the playoffs, than it is worth it.
