MTB Dudes,

I've got my eye on a getting a Marin Muirwoods bike since it seems to cover pretty well what I want to do with a bike (90% urban commute / 10% easy bike trails). I've found one in an auction and would really appreciate your feedback. It retails at around £425 and is currently sitting at £175 so looks to be a good bargain for last year's model.

EBay Auction

Marin Muirwoods

Thanks very much!

£145 is a pretty sweet deal for that....Deore components are on the lower half of the components they offer, but are very strong and very durable. I do a lot of downhill (2-4 days a week), ride with the odd Deore component and they hold up pretty good....they are also cheap to replace when they explode!! The component package alone is going to run very close to the current price of that bike.

Alex rims are a good name, you'll see the higher end models on top end Rocky Mountain bikes. I ride with a guy that ANNILATES rims, and has yet to blow his apart. Those rims will work with a mtn bike tire if you want to swap 'em out and ride trails, so they're plenty strong.

Truvativ cranks are good 'n sturdy (just replaced mine after 2 yrs). No worries there, they'll take whatever you throw at them if you're riding mainly street.

I rode a Marin Nail Trail about 8yrs ago for 3 years, and had no major problems with it. They make a really good frame, so I would definately recommend it (especially for that price). You may find Chromoly frames ride a bit stiff, but on the street it shouldn't matter all that much.

This would be my quick, initial summary based on price and componentry with no regard whatsoever for your intended use.....at least with that bike you could easily toss on front suspension, knobby tires and rip XC if you got sick of inhaling exhaust all day!!

Side note: Have you ever bought anything on Ebay before? Be careful man, there's loads of scams on there.

Wow, cheers for all that thoughtful input!

In the end, I expect to pay in the region of £250 once having it delivered is factored in, but I still think that's a pretty good deal.

I think the components are up to whatever I'd throw at them. I can't see me being too gung-ho on it. As I said, just mainly riding around on the streets and perhaps a bit of distance riding (roads) and the occational "off-road" trail.

I've been in personal contact with the guy, so I feel that it is less likely it's a scam, but you never know. Thanks for the warning.
