Chiarelli for GM of the year is like the Lotto Max winner for financial analyst of the year.

Interesting that this award is voted on after the second round of the playoffs whereas all others are conducted at the end of the regular season.
I think Poile wins based on that.

If you judge Chiarelli solely on his work since the end of last regular season it's pretty solid imo.
Dumped cancer Hall for a decent d-man
Signed (somehow stud) Benning
Added functional depth and toughness
Even a broken clock is right twice a day

I would have replaced Chiarelli with Bob Murray from Anaheim. In the final 4 with no top picks and almost 10 deep on D. Hate the Ducks all you want, but they are a well built team from top to bottom. Same with Rutherford in Pittsburgh. Kept a cup winning team together and back in the final 4.
In fact, I don't agree with this list being chosen this early. The entire point of the NHL season/playoffs is to win the Cup. I honestly think the cup winning team should have the winning GM, period. I don't see how anyone could argue otherwise. Make the final 4 the top 4 nominees. If Chiarelli (or any of the other 2 nominees) win this award, yet the Pens or Ducks win the cup, that's bloody stupid.

Never really followed the NHL awards after I found out when the votes are cast. Conn Smythe is the only one I give any attention to tbh.

What has Chiarelli done this season? Turned two first overalls into a 2-3 stay at home d man, a late third and Zach Pochiro? Kept Puljujarvi up for too long playing 3 mins a night to burn a UFA year?

Same argument could be made for the coach

Chia wins due to the sheer amount of skill needed to draft Conner McDavid.

Chiarelli? For winning a lottery? Buying an old-time slow veteran? Really?

I can see Chiarelli getting respect around the league for the decision to move Hall for Larsen.
hall was the face of the franchise, a high profile scoring winger. They moved him for what was a second pairing defenceman with first pairing upside.
The trade paid off. It was the "bold move" that three predecessors were unable or unwilling to do.

David Poile and Bob Murray should be winning this award nearly every year IMO.

GM of the year is kind of stupid because frankly the moves done this year might handicap the team or wreck it the next.
Signing Lucic might have help a bit during the regular season, but he was poor in the playoffs especially the second round and that contract might become a boat anchor.
Trading Hall for Larsson might have worked out in the short term, but long term it might not be a great deal.
The biggest move that got them to the playoffs didn't even happen this year and that's getting Talbot who was one of two key reasons why the Oilers got anywhere.
I'm not saying that Chia shouldn't have gotten nominated for the award, but frankly it might be that thing on his resume where we say "Remember when he was nominated for GM of the year in 2017? Whatever happened to that guy?

The crazy thing about the best GM award is that if you have built a really good team up over the years you have less of a chance to win the award because you aren't making many moves.
It's pretty similar to the coach of the year award in that they usually hand it out to the guy who had the team with the biggest point improvement.
Poile is the best choice to me. Call it a lifetime achievement award.

Poile deserves this award. Sadly, I do think Chiarelli is a good GM. His biggest flaw it's that he doesn't like giving young players pay raises.

If Poile doesn't win, it would be a travesty.
