Default Is Justin Schultz finally free of the Oilers Stink?

He's having an amazing year. He had a great slap pass with minutes remaining for the winner today as well. He is finally ridding of himself of the Oilers stink I'd say.

44 points this season and a +28

Can Nugent Hopkins do the same if moved? Could be too late.

Look at Gagner or Dubnyk. Most of their highly touted draft picks seem to flourish right when they leave

If only we could move Edmonton further away from Calgary. Probably wouldn't have had such a terrible start to the season without that stank from the northern wind.

Man we're those Oiler teams bad. And really they're still not even that great with a generational talent on their team and still one of their other 4 first overalls to go along with a 3rd overall. They are 7-7 in their last 14 when the hockey matters the most; jury is still very much out on them IMO.

It was fun to make fun of him while he was an Oiler. But man oh man is it sweet to see him have success now that he's gotten that Oil stank off of him.

I think any ex-Oilers, particularly highly touted ones, need some time to wash the Oilers stink off before they bloom. It's why I'm willing to take a buy-low chance on Yakupov in the offseason. How sweet would it be to acquire a former Oilers 1st OA for peanuts and then actually have him find some success?

Offensively or defensively? Both?

I ask honestly. I've watched zero Pittsburgh games this year. Good for him if he gets it together for good, but I'm skeptical that he's all of a sudden a top pairing Dman.

His numbers look very good:

61GP
11G
33A
44pts
28+/-

5th best in the NHL.

Those are really good numbers. Why couldnt he do that in Edmonton?

Oh right! Because they're No Good.

He is their best D man in both aspects of the game on defence. Letang can put up better numbers but is a nightmare defensively. I watch a lot of Pens games because I have 6 of them in my pool. Schultz is a beauty.

Six more years of Lucic, Draisaitl coming off his ELC after this year and McDavid coming off his ELC next year. I certainly don't envy their cap situation at all.

Could this year be Edmonton's entire window?

Schultz has great counting stats, but plus-minus, as always, is a function of the team he is on. In terms of being a "top pairing defenceman", no. The Penguins shelter him and give him by far the least defensive zone starts on the team. They know his value is in his offensive skill, not defensive, and play him appropriately. That, along with playing on a team with actual offensive talent, is why he succeeds in Pittsburgh where he failed in Edmonton.
