Paid to travel?
If you have to travel for work how are you compensated?
I am thinking specifically with respect to your time.
For example
If you have to go to Edmonton for two days are you paid 3 hours each way for travel or for your time from the minute you leave your house to the minute you arrive in your hotel room?
If hourly, is it overtime/included in your standard 8 hour day?
If salary do you get time off in lieu if your travels/work took longer than 8 hours?
If you fly somewhere are you paid from leaving your house until arriving at the hotel?
If your plane is late or you got to the airport early are you on the clock sitting in the airport?
Thanks

I am a consultant, operating usually on contract.
Specified daily rate while working away, including the day of departure and return. I generally include everything in that rate (transfers, vehicle rental, accommodations and meals as necessary) because I find it easier to manage record keeping, but some clients choose to provide ground necessities at their cost instead.

I'm on salary so it's the same regardless of where I travel and when.

When I was a consultant, and working in the field, I started billing as soon as my front door closed, and stopped when I sent in my notes and hours.

I'm on salary and don't get extra compensation for travel.
Either I take the company car or they pay for whatever method of travel I need to use (car rental, taxi, bus/train, plane). They also pay for accommodations, if any are needed, registration for any event that I'm going to and meals that aren't provided by the event.
If I go to a conference somewhere touristy then maybe I'll stay a few extra days (then I have to pay for meals and accommodations for the extra days), but being at a touristy location for work purposes is okay with me and I likely wouldn't be wouldn't be at that location for free anyway so I don't bother counting time in these situations. Doing so just feels so petty to me.
If I fly from Lethbridge to Edmonton and back on the same day for a meeting then it is a longer day than what I am used to, so maybe I'll pick a day and go home an hour or two early within the next week. Maybe I don't. No big deal. I work for a great place that offers a lot of great flexibility so I'm not going to bother with these details. Saves me a lot of hassle that way too.

I am on salary and don't travel a lot. but my rule of thumb would be if we are talking an extra couple of hours per month here and there, then no big deal.
if it is an extra day, then I would take some time off in lieu of - for example, a few years ago I went down tot eh US for a work thing - it was a 14 hour day of travel from the time I left my house, until I sat in the hotel room, so I went a day early (paid for the room in the hotel myself) on aa sunday, and then went sightseeing on Monday. I charged tot eh room tot eh company because I flew down on a weekend the overall air fare was cheaper than going to Monday to Wednesday.
I got home at 2 am, and went into work as per usual the next day - and then left two hours early on Friday. flet tlike everything was even.

I receive time in lieu but I work for a not-for-profit so extra money isn't really in the budget.
That said if my flight home arrives after midnight then I get the next day off.

I am a consultant / contractor.
I bill straight time regardless of travel or work time. No OT or banked hours.

I'm an electrician and get paid by the hour. When we work in other cities, either we drive there and back each day and get paid from the time we get to shop in morning to the time we get back to shop at night, or if flying to Vancouver for example, we get paid from time leaving shop to end of that work day in Vancouver (flight included) then paid from time we leave hotel to time we get back each day we're there. Hotels are paid for + $50/day sub when on road.
