Singer George Michael has died aged 53, his publicist has said.
The star, who launched his career with Wham in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, is said to have "passed away peacefully at home".

From the music industry to screen stars and sports legends, if it feels like a large number of celebrities died in 2016, it's true.
Is 2016 the year of celebrity death?
Linnea Crowther is the author of celebrity obituaries for the site Legacy.com.
In October, Crowther offered her analysis of celebrity deaths.
"As of September 30, the total number of celebrity deaths so far in 2016 is 71," she wrote. "That's more than the total number of celebrity deaths for the full year in any of the other years I looked at for this study. We're already outpacing previous years by 5 to 20 deaths, and we still have three months to go."
Since then, more stars have been added to the list including beloved TV parents Florence Henderson and Alan Thicke, veteran newscaster Gwen Ifill and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen.
On Christmas Day, police in the U.K. confirmed the death of Michael, whose music helped define the 1980s.
^if you look at deaths in isolation, sure. But comparing it to births and the number of celebrities 60-80 years ago (yes, I get Micheal is an outlier) vs the number of celebrities 100 years ago, is it that high a number? I'll be amazed if the next 10-20 years are much better than 2016.
It's not a coincidence we have more celebrity deaths as we approach the 52-70 year mark of the baby boomers...

It seems as though many of the deaths are premature. Michaels didn't die of old age. Similarly Prince was 57.
It's probably a combination of what your are stating but also bad luck.

That's why I said Michaels was the outlier. Prince also, but honestly IMO after 55 I wouldn't consider it premature. Unfortunate sure but we'll within the realm of possibility.
Paul Walker, Heath Ledger, Jim Morrison, now those were pre-mature.
Take the Carrie Fisher thread for example. Over 60 and years of coke abuse. Unfortunate? Yes. Surprise? Shouldn't be.
Wow people are ever calluse from the safe confines behind their computer screens. Jim Morrison, an alcoholic drug abuser died premature in a time when numerous celebrities died from either or both causes? Prince died from a drug overdose as did Heath Ledger. They are all tragic deaths to people gone far to soon but to then blame Carrie Fisher's past for her current state as a "meh" response is just utterly cold and inhumane, especially on Christmas.
As to the reason for this thread (and not the moronic blaming of the year on the calendar) I just watched Keanu the other night and the George Michael subplot was hilarious. Wham! was a bit before my time but the gas fight scene in Zoolander wouldn't be the same without them.
