Default Former Flame Martin St Louis having # retired by Tampa Bay.

A player that I would have been criticized for defending back in the dark days of the Flames not making the playoffs. "He was too small." "He can't play with Iggy." "Crappy defense." I can hear the choir now. This is why I love being a contrarian because in time things come out in the wash.

Signed as free agent in Tampa (Calgary got nothing). He then went on to be Tampa Bay's leading point getter, assist leader, GWG leader.

#26 in the rafters. Good job Marty!

You could have made the same thread without the "told you so" aspect. It's not a flattering look.

Congrats Martin!

While it's nice that St. Louis is getting his number retired, I'm glad that it isn't overshadowing the more important aspect - you were right.

He also won the cup over Calgary in the finals 2004.

This is one of the saddest things I've read in a while.

He didn't say he was criticized for defending him, he said he would have been criticized for defending him.

So congrats on using hindsight to overcome your imaginary criticism of the past, FlamesFan68.

Really? Wow, I never knew that. You'd think this is something that would have come up.

I'm super glad we have a would have been contrarian/super historian like you on the payroll.

Keep up the good work!

Flames don't give the guy a real shot and he goes on to burn them in the end. Great career but I can never like him after 04.

Congrats Martin!
There's enough unflattering comments about myself going around by less than desirable peeps, would you expect anything else? He was allowed to develop in the USHL because no one drafted him. He spent most of his time in the AHL (even the IHL) Calgary farm system.

Defending him then I would have been discredited because of a spelling error. However, it is a player I did defend and thought he wasn't given enough ice time back then. Today, hardly a peep from anyone would disagree, back then it was not the case.

Really? Even during that run when asked about Calgary letting him go and whether that burned him, he'd just say something along the lines of - 'they are the reason I even got into the league.'. AFAIK, he never said anything bad about Calgary. Yeah, it sucks they won and we didn't, but I'm happy he made it. And that Calgary was a part of that. *sob*

St. Louis was a great player and is certainly worthy of having his jersey raised to the rafters. Yet OP managed to spin it around and make it all about himself.

One of my least favourite players of all time. A huge cry baby and pouter. Whined non stop about some spin o Rama goal in a shootout then did one himself. Hypocrite. I hate him.
