I think Jagr has earned the right to be legitimately compared to Gordie Howe.

I take back everything bad I said about him in the 90's.

Truly a legend. It's been a treat to watch him this year. He still has so much fun out there.

Had he not earned that right before?

Great achievement.

Imagine if he had spent KHL years and lockout active in the NHL

Can we please get through one Jagr thread without this coming up? It's really a pointless argument. It can't change. Maybe he would've retired in 2010 if he kept playing here. Maybe he'd get bored with the game.

Instead of focusing on these maybes and pointless rhetorical questions, why don't we look at the great achievement that's just occurred? Live in the present moment.

If we are playing what if... would Jagr have caught up to Howe if Howe didn't spend 6 seasons in the WHA?

But also: what a great accomplishment. Fun to watch and seems like a player you really want on your time.

I think he could hit 2000...

Can't wait for him to pass Messier. I hate that Messier is second.

It's fun to think about what could have been.

Like how many goals Ovechkin & Iggy would have if they didn't sit through 2 lockouts each.

Such an amazing achievement.

The sad thing is that with all the legends I grew up watching (Sakic, Selanne, Roy, Brodeur, Lidstrom, etc) the ones who are left (Jagr, Iginla, Thornton et al) will all soon be retired. Who's the next older''legend'' to take over? Iginla maybe? Thornton if he plays until he's 40? Who's the next player to be that true legend that will break some of the all-time records? I can think of Ovechkin and Crosby maybe if he stays healthy.

It's so neat to watch some of these guys break records that have stood for decades. But other then Ovechkin maybe breaking some of the goal records, I fear we'll be in a record-breaking ''drought'' once lots of these older guys retire, as I don't really see any of the new wave of superstars coming anywhere close to what these guys did.

I like the What if game. What if the NHL recognized the WHA statistics in career totals? Gretzky would then have over 900 goals and 2,000 assists. Howe beats Gretzky in the career goals total, 975 to 940.

Iggy and Thornton aren't really breaking any records, but they will be considered legends when they retire. Iggy especially, for his goals.

Crosby and Ovechkin will definitely be in the legend category of this generation if they continue doing what they are doing. Just like with Iggy, Ovi's goals will cement him as one of the all-time greatest.

If the hype is real, McDiver will be the next generation of legend.
