Default Winter driving practice

My daughter smacked up her car a bit during this latest snowfall. She has no confidence in these slippery conditions and I'd like to take her out someplace in the Calgary area do do some slides, fishtails, etc to give her some practice.
Any good recommendations on where we could go?

There used to be really cheap ice racing lessons on ghost lake every year.

There are some good industrial areas just off 52nd SE where there is nothing to hit but snowbanks. Like the areas between Glenmore and 114th.

If I remember correctly, Centre Street Church or some massive church just off Centre St / Edmonton Tr. by 32nd Ave has a massive parking lot with no concrete blocks. It was a dream to do donuts in. I think anywhere though that doesn't have a ditch or any obstacles would be fine to sort of understand the dynamics of the vehicle, like braking distance on ice/snow and whatnot. It would be good to be able to get up to a normal highway speed to let her get the experience of an emergency and having to brake hard and how the car responds. Other good stuff would be to teach her about getting unstuck and changing a tire, if she doesn't already know.

Max Bell parking lot. Empty during the afternoon and the levels change quite a bit.

Get her on the highway at the wheel of a busload of nuns, orphans, and puppies.

Or you could invest in some studded tires instead of letting her drive around on bald all seasons...

Hopefully she's riding on winter tires. All seasons aren't good enough for the winter weather we have had this season.

My daughter runs a full set of winter tires from October to April every year. I can't imagine driving without those in this city; she just does not have the experience (or feel) in driving on very slick roads.

I like the Ghose Lake idea and will sign her up for a Saturday class. Can anyone drive on that lake (during the week lets say)? Do you need special permission or a permit?

Go east and hit the rural grid roads. No traffic, winter conditions. No pressure.

Rush hour on a Monday morning or evening. Or any weekday, really.

Or at least that is what it appears other people are doing based on the driving habits I've witnessed over the last two weeks.

And to really make the practice feel real, make sure she only drives in the left lane at about 2/3 of the speed limit and the vehicle is covered in snow and ice, especially the rear window.

I've driven with all season tires every year for... 11 years now. As long as you're careful, you're fine, especially in the city.

We get them on our SUV because my wife works out in Didsbury. I've driven it several times this winter and have honestly not noticed a big difference. I still don't buy the winter tire hype -- driving skill and safety matters infinitely more. This guy's daughter has winter tires on half the year and has still slipped and slid and smashed all over the place.

So you have been lucky. It really doesn't matter how good a driver you are, if some idiot cuts you off, or something happens in front of you, winter tires WILL stop you quicker. Their is no debate to be had. So you can continue to be fortunate until you are not.

Anecdotal evidence for the win.
Let me guess, your dad drove for X amount of years without winter tires, no accidents either?
