2nd half of a back to back against one of the best teams. I suppose I shouldn't be too mad about the loss. I will, however, exercise my right to throw a childish tantrum over the 2nd period and the officiating...

Pretty bad game tonight. Really want to see this team play with some consistency. One game they look ****ing great, they are fast, putting forth a good effort, then the next game, they don't move their feet, are slow, and look like they can't wait for the game to end at puck drop. Also sick of the Refs and their ticky tack nonsense. Get a grip, Stripes.

Flames have to bounce back next game. I want to see them skating like the wind, balls to the wall effort.

Can't watch this sad sack reffing every odd game + flames getting blown out by competitive teams. It's a bit too much to take on the ol' heart.

Going to distance myself a bit until they string at least another couple Ws together. Hopefully very soon.

Not much to like in this one outside of the first period. PK was really good, so there's that. Let's hope they can beat the Canucks on Friday so as not to ruin Christmas.

Flames are looking like the good bad team...can usually take care of bad teams but also usually lose to the good teams.

Next month gonna be key to see if they can hang around and truly be in it like 14-15 or fade away like last year.

Sharks are just a better team, so if you have a rough game, or a rough period, you're in trouble. Not a lot to like about tonight. Just try to forget it and move on. I don't want to whine about the officiating too much, but there were some strange calls and non-calls tonight, usually favouring the home team. They didn't really need the help.

The thing is, the Sharks aren't a supremely disciplined team. The Flames got one powerplay in 60 minutes. That's garbage. Backlund took hooks & slashes all game, no calls.

The holding call on Gio was crap, the tkachuk penalty was crap, and so was the "trip" on Pavelski (Hamilton?)

Pretty damn tough to win when there are two different rulebooks.

Sucks to lose, but the Flames aren't too far away from being good enough to win in a 7 game series with a cup contending Sharks team. Perfect penalty kill, shut down San Jose's top players, and had a couple stretches where the Flames did dictate play. Monahan looked good, I noticed both Frolik and Ferland with dynamic shifts, and Backlund had at least 2 beastly shifts that the hockey gods could have been a bit more generous on. Tkachuk continues to look like a veteran. I liked that Gaudreau wasn't given the keys to do as he pleased double shifting when we 'needed some offense', he is guilty of the juiciest giveaways on a regular basis and there are games I'm happy he just keeps a spot in the regular rotation. Anyway, I'm not too deterred by this one, we lost to a team with better depth and home cooked officiating.

If the Flames got a chance to work with the PP in the 3rd given how productive it's been maybe they could've legitimately made a game out of it. 3 straight Sharks PPs after the Bennett goal made sure the Flames weren't going to generate momentum or spend any time in the offensive end.

Maybe the calls were legitimate to some eyes, maybe they were a bit phantom-y in nature. But if you're gonna call it like that at a crucial point in the game, then call it both ways why don't you?

The reffing wasn't even bad tonight. One team was moving their feet, and the other wasn't.

Monahan had one of his best games in a while, he looked much more dangerous tonight than any game during his point streak. Gaudreau was not his usual self, hopefully there's no long-term effects after yesterday's rough game.

The Flames have been looking more and more like the 14-15 Flames recently as well. Lots of stretch passes and losing their structure in the defensive zone. Way too many breakdowns tonight. The two Donskoi goals were examples of what happens when you stop playing hard. Everyone gets lost, and the bad guys beat you to the puck.

I'm expecting a much better effort against Vancouver;

Well our PK was 5/5. Maybe you could argue that it tired our defensive players, or we could have scored a couple with more PPs, but I dont think thats enough to make up for allowing four even goals. We just got outplayed big time the last 14 minutes of the second and that was enough.

Flames have a pretty easy stretch coming up and hopefully we can get 10-12 points in our next 7 games. If not I think we're in a bit of trouble.

Well the Coyotes don't really count cuz they're just incompetent at playing hockey

Agree, Sharks dominated a good part of the second and Flames let in 4.

Refs did not create the SJ surge but did hurt any momentum and pushback with the double standard.

I saw the "10 lies hockey fans tell themselves" or whatever where they suggest that the fans all are homerish and accusatory to the zebras . This is often fair to say when the data bears out that their team is penalized in line with others.

Coming in to the game SJ had something like 90 minors to Calgary's 150 (?)

And tonight we see Calgary widen the gap with their very best Broad Street Bullies impersonation.

Missed the game tonight unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view). If anyone could tell me how Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, and Bennett played that would be much appreciated!

Gaudreau: Invisible despite having the best chances of any Flame. Seemed hesitant to enter puck battles, not as persistent as he usually is.

Monahan: Probably his most effective game offensively of the season. Won a few foot races and protected the puck much better than he usually does.

Tkachuk: He was more Gaudreau than Ferland tonight. Lots of fancy plays, not much physical play. His whole line had trouble getting to the high danger areas but they controlled play when they were out there. Strong game as usual though.

Bennett: Scored a goal but pretty unremarkable outside of that.

The next seven games will give you all you need to know about this team and it's fortunes for the balance of the season.

They play Vancouver three times, Colorado twice, and once each against Arizona and Anaheim (in CGY).

They realistically should go 5-2 in those 7 games at a minimum. If they accomplish that, they will be on pace to push for that elusive playoff spot. Anything less than that, and you can increasingly look forward to which RW the Flames will be taking in the top 10 this year. You cannot surrender more than a couple points to lousy teams and expect to be a playoff team. 6/10 of the remaining games in January are against good teams, coughing up points early makes it significantly more difficult to get them against the better clubs.
