Market Research for New Product Development

Does anyone have any experience with getting market research done for new product development? My company is looking at developing a new line of products that would specifically target a certain segment of the home construction/renovation market, and I'm looking at the possibility of getting some market research done not only for better data/info of what people would be interested in, but I am also looking at the possibility of obtaining government funding to help with the marketing/development/deployment costs.
