Core 4 under 24 (TSN article)
No surprise who's at number 1, but the Flames get some love at #4
4. CALGARY FLAMES
PLAYER AGE 2016-17 GP G A PTS
1. Johnny Gaudreau, LW 23 Calgary 25 7 15 22
2. Sean Monahan, C 22 Calgary 35 10 10 20
3. Matthew Tkachuk, LW 18 Calgary 31 6 12 18
4. Dougie Hamilton, RD 23 Calgary 35 6 12 18
Scoop: Gaudreau and Monahan have been two of the most consistent producers across the NHL, combining for 141 points last year — the most of any duo on this board. Sam Bennett, who didn’t make the list, helped provide the tiebreaker over Tampa Bay.

McDavid carries that "core" kicking and screaming to the #1 spot.
Also love how many of these cores list players who are playing AHL, junior or in europe. Talk about prospect hype.

I get McDavid is #1 and rightfully so but I would take the Leafs, Jets and Flames actual core over the Oilers any day.

If the point of the list is who has the best 4, Edmonton shouldn't be #1. They top the Core 1 Under 24.
The best 1 and junk doesn't equate.

What's great is that they don't even mention Bennett who could easily slide into either of the bottom 2 slots. We have some very good very young players.

Ridiculous to call Draisaitl and Puljujärvi junk. Not worthy of this board. Draisaitl is outplaying Bennett by a good margin this year.

So sick of McDavid. No way does just his presence put them at the top.
No one else in the top 5 has a Dman like Hamilton. I like our 4 over the others, especially since Sam Bennett isn't even on it.

Puljujarvi hasn't had the best showing, but he also shouldn't be in the NHL right now.
Draisaitl has been a beast, he and McDavid are that team's future.

Yeah you can't discount Edmonton unfortunately. McDavid and Drai could be the best 1-2 centre punch for the next decade. Puljujarvi will start rolling sooner or later, and Klefbom while not a top pairing guy is still a good young d man. That said, I still feel Calgary has a very strong and better balanced core.

Pujblah blah blah is nowhere near NHL ready and Klefbom would have to be ranked as a disappointment this year, he's been bad. McDavid and Draisaitl the future 20 million dollar duo is pretty much the only thing they have. I also think that they get a lot of hype, Nurse has been ok but not great, RNH is a disaster for a 6 million dollar player and Larsson can't hold a candle to Hamilton.
If this was a top two then fine, but the Oilers have two good players one meh player and one not ready for prime time player which means its not a great top 4 and certainly not number one, the Leafs and Jets are probably ahead of them. And that should be a bitter pill for the fans of the Oilers to swallow because it just exposes how terrible their drafting and development is, they should be running away with this.
Frankly I do like Calgary's better because its more well rounded and consistent. This is just more of a the media pleasuring McDavid.

These lists don't mean a whole lot until one of the teams take a step from mediocrity to contender. Jets and Flames have kind of been spinning their wheels the past few seasons not getting any better. Oilers may be getting better finally but having the best player in the league (IMO) helps.

Which would more than adequately explain why one is on this list while the other is not. It still doesn't change the fact that Edmonton's top four as a group is arguably not as good as four or five other teams.

I would still say Crosby is a superior player to McDavid. Connor might be #2 already, but he still has quite a ways to go to catch Sid (and I'm not the biggest Crosby supporter).

Can't really argue the rankings. McDavid is leading the league in scoring and obviously elevates their whole ranking. I like our top 4, but there are players like them who get drafted every year. Not McDavid unfortunately. Still shows the Flames are well positioned since in the long run reliance on one player is fraught with peril.

You're in a thread doing just this. I think the biggest problem is that the ranking gives too much weight to McDavid. If it's him and 3 scrubs, do you still rank Edmonton so high even if McDavid is "generational"?

I don't have a problem with the Oilers being at the top of the list - the rest of their team is still a joke.
And while you can debate the order, I think it's pretty clear that they got the top 4 right: EDM, WPG, TOR and CAL are clearly the top teams by this metric at the moment.

I'm saying that I don't argue the rankings.
When you're taking about just 4 players, yeah I think one great player can elevate the entire group.
If it's McDavid and 3 scrubs (which it isn't) I still rank them extremely high. Every team in the league would have traded their entire draft class for McDavid IMO.
Would I trade Gaudreau, Monahan, Hamilton and Tkachuk for their 4? Yeah probably. Truly generational players seem to find ways to win championships. But that's not even something I want to think about.
