Corey Crawford undergoes emergency appendectomy
in Philly this morning...
“Corey presented this morning with acute appendicitis," team physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a statement. "He is undergoing an appendectomy today at a Philadelphia hospital. We are anticipating a full recovery and return to play. We will provide details regarding the timeline of his return after we have more information about the surgery.”

They pulled a guy out of nowhere to be the backup today. His name is Eric Semborski and he played for Temple University (which is in Philadelphia).
I love crazy situations like this. He totally looks like a deer in the headlights right now, but he's got a cool story to tell for the rest of his life.
Flyers just went up 2-1. He might get a chance!

I think I read $500, but I can't remember if that was league wide or just what the Flames gave their emergency back up.

Yep, unless it's been changed recently it's $500 and a jersey.

And then the Hawks text someone else who'll do it for $500, and this dude misses out on having his own actual NHL Chicago Blackhawks jersey that he otherwise would never have had.

I think I read that not even the jersey is part of the contract but that most teams will just give it to them because it would be a total cheapskate, dick move for an organization worth hundreds of millions to keep a named jersey because the contract says they can, lol.

Technically, he signed an AMATEUR tryout contract...to maintain amateur status, probably, the compensation is capped.

This, from the Chicago Tribune:
They could not sign goaltender coach Jimmy Waite because as a former professional, Waite would have made a salary that would have counted against the salary cap and the Hawks had no room.
Semborski suited up in a No. 50 jersey that had Crawford's name removed and his name on it. Semborski signed an amateur tryout agreement, meaning he made no money for suiting up Saturday.
"It was just cool they asked me to be a part of it," Semborski said. "I'm not asking them for anything. I owe them, really."

Seriously, the Hawks have so little cap room that they couldn't afford their trainer for one day of suiting up?!? Even with a 625k min, one games of salary is only $7, 622.00
