FACING THE WILD

Tonight's contest is the second of three games the Calgary Flames will play against the Minnesota Wild in the 2016-17 season. The Flames took the first game by a score of 1-0 on Nov. 15 at the Xcel Energy Center. Chad Johnson made 27 saves in his shutout performance in Minnesota while Johnny Gaudreau netted the game's lone goal. This year's series will wrap up on Feb. 1 when the Wild make their second stop at the Scotiabank Saddledome this season. In their last 10 home games against the Wild, the Flames are 4-4-2.

tonight, the State of Hockey has a date with the State of Insanity:

So with the goon the Wild have called up, supposedly to be a deterrent to any shenanigans the Flames have in mind to avenge Johnny, what is the over/under on the number of fights in this game?

1?

They already have Stewart, he's a tough SOB. Why would they need another goon?

I would hope someone beats the piss out of Staal. Who cares about this goon, let him skate around like a donkey while the Flames fourth line expose weaknesses in his game.

Maybe worried the Flames might seek retribution after star Johnny Gaudreau was sidelined with a broken finger following a slash in last month’s meeting with Minnesota, the Wild recalled bruiser Kurtis Gabriel from AHL Iowa.

The Flames lead the NHL in times shorthanded (97) and have the third-worst penalty kill in the league (77.3 percent).

“Look it, the Gaudreau injury, if you watch hockey, it was an accident,” Boudreau said. “If you play hockey, you know the gloves are made out of nothing now. Everybody gets touched. It was Eric Staal. Eric Staal, what was the most penalty minutes he’s ever got in a year? If you think he’s a dirty player that’s going for Gaudreau’s hand, then we’re all mistaken.”

Flames blogs found what they alleged were 21 examples of the Wild slashing Gaudreau. Three in particular — two by Staal, one by Ryan Suter — seemed to hurt Gaudreau.

“I think it was a crazy allegation by them, but at the same time, you never know what’s going to happen,” said Boudreau, referring to why Gabriel was recalled.

Sure Boudreau...just keep deflecting. It was a "crazy" well-documented "allegation". I can't imagine why they would want to bring a goon up?

If they didn't think they did anything wrong, in what world would it make sense to bring up a barely passable AHL enforcer?
