Default John Scott retires... (with awesome Players Tribune article)

... and talks about life post-All Star game on The Players Tribune:

http://www.theplayerstribune.com/john-scott-retirement/

Quote:
I had just arrived in Nashville for the 2016 All-Star Game. After I landed, I went out with a few of the guys. We hung out on Broadway at the honky-tonk bars and had a blast.

I was lovin’ it.

I had been traded under some pretty suspicious circumstances two weeks earlier, and my life had been turned upside down, but hey, I was an All-Star. I was reunited with some of my old Sharks buddies. My wife was about to have twins. All the drama was behind me. In my mind, it was all good.

But just as I get back to my hotel room to lie down and watch TV, the phone rings. Not my cell phone. The hotel room phone with the loud, old-school brrrrrring.

Cue the mafioso music.

I pick up, and a mysterious voice says, “Hello, John. Mister Bettman would
like to meet with you.”

I’m like, “What?”

“He’s coming to your hotel right now.”

“Uhhh?”

“Be downstairs in five minutes.”

Click.

I’m not exaggerating. I put my shoes back on and walked to the elevator. I was laughing to myself like, Am I about to get whacked?

Yes, I do think fighting has a place in the game, and that enforcers keep some of the bull#### in check and the stars safe from serious injury (just ask Johnny Gaudreau right now).
Nice little shoutout in the article from John.

Yeah, but just outside of being an enforcer, he was a dirty player himself.

"I had to beat up two or three kids before everybody realized, Hey, you know what? Let’s leave the old man alone"

Lol I don't know why but I loved this part. Dude is freaking huge, an NHL All-star and 10 years your senior, good luck with that boys.

Yes, which is why you need people like him to keep people like him in check.

Another great tribune article.

Good luck to him in his future endeavors. He was the last of his kind in the game and he miraculously became an all-star sensation before retiring.

Although I never really watch him play that much during his career, at least I got to live through his crazy story. Just like the old guard can tell us about the phantom Japanese draft pick or the hockey fan who got beat up with a shoe from Mike Millbury, we can one day reminiscent on the Goon All-Star and tell the younger generation we were there.

great stuff, that meeting with Bettman must have been pretty surreal. Loved the part about coming full circle and seeing a lot of himself in the younger guys in the AHL. Happy retirement!

Just loved it. My favorite part was the end quote that really puts things in perspective for dumb internet trolls that really only wish they could have what even the lowest skilled NHL players had in their careers.

Quote:
You know, I still get chirped by people on the Internet. They’ll say, “You’re just a joke. You only scored five goals in your NHL career.”

What can I say?

You’re damn right I did.

Oh I'm sure almost all of these are Ghost-written, but they're still great.

Yeah PT usually has a copy editor that works with the athletes to write this stuff. At the same time, John is a smart guy so I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't require a bunch of assistance on it.

That's the best Player's Tribune article I've read. It has too much personality to be a ghost writer IMO. So many great quotes in there. You should mention the PT article in the thread title. More will enter.

I would watch a John Scott movie starring John Scott.

Well Scott does have a degree (from an Ivy league school if I recall). Now I haven't met too many engineers who can write well, but many at least know how to write. I think he said he's an engineer, but don't quote me.

Honestly, I'm going to miss John Scott. He's had a whirlwind of a career, especially towards the end. But him at the all-star game is a hockey memory I'll never forget. I still get goosebumps hearing the fans chant ''MVP" and him scoring twice. You honestly couldn't script it any better.

Kind of bittersweet for him and his family that he was sent back to the east coast and was away from his wife after she gave birth to twins. But he'll forever have a lasting memory of that game to share with his friends and family years from now. Best of luck to him in his retirement.

In a league devoid of personalities, even with ghost writers, Player's Tribune is a godsend.
