Default Landscape designer (anyone have a referral?)

Does anyone have any good referrals for what I think is probably called a “Landscape Designer”?

Simply, I have absolutely no green thumb, and need help with figuring out what kind shrubs, trees, and perennials to plant to make the property look good (while also being cognizant of what can grow in certain areas that only get very limited direct sunlight). While not a new house/property, there was only a single tree planted when we moved in, and the large retaining wall that we have all along our back fence is just full of dirt (and weeds).

I need help from a “pro” to layout a design that will be relatively low maintenance, while also adding some “curb appeal” in the front yard. I see many “do it yourselfers” who have done a great job on their own, but I’ve also seen a lot of bad looking landscape jobs, and know that anything I try to do on my own will fit into the latter category.

I know a lady who was our designer when we ran our landscaping company. It was amazing the things she new about plants. She isn't in town any more though, so she might not be interested in making the trip for a single job.

I will check if she is interested and PM you details if she is.

I'd suggest Scatliff Miller Murray, they're really good... but I'm not sure they do small residential projects.

My wife does this on the side. She is a certified horticulturist from Olds college and is a complete walking encyclopedia of all sorts of plants and what will grow here. You should see her blood pressure go up in Home Depot (or the like) when they have plants that will not survive in our climate.

Anyway, pm me if you are interested.

Here is something that I am working with for the flip I'm doing. There is virtually no maintenance at all, just have to be watered once a week give or take, and I have since fixed the grass. Once the plants fill out they'll take up more visual space, which should take a year or two

That was a big thing with us when we re-did landscaping in an existing home. Almost always we were pulling out dead cedars that were put in a couple years earlier.

You really need someone with an extensive horticultural experience to do something like this properly (unless you are like me and would rather do away with the plants entirely). So whoever you choose, make sure they have that experience.

I do believe we are in area 2 for our climate. So basically very few things will sustainably grow in Calgary.

zone 3 actually. but micro-climates may exist in sheltered yards, but nothing extreme.
