Looking For Advice re: Possible Flames Roadtrip
Alright,
So I have a board meeting scheduled for January 24th in Toronto, which means flying in the day before.
There just so happens to be a Leafs game on January 23rd at the ACC against some Western Conference team whose logo looks like it's on fire.
Sounds too perfect right? My first Flames road game, and first time seeing them live in 12 years.
Start packing my Flames socks, Flames underwear, Flames t-shirt, Flames hoodie, Flames jersey, and Flames hat now right?
Well here's the wrinkle in the plan...
My wife's due date is February 11. First child.
Is that cutting it a little too close? Obviously I'll be checking with the baby doc for her opinion, but there's no such thing as too much information.
I mean what are the odds she goes into labour the 23rd or 24th, right?

Go to the game, skip the board meeting.

Your fine. The reason they call it a due date is that's when the baby arrives. It might be out by a day or two but that's it.

Babies are born all the time. Most people have more than one anyways, so as long as you're there for those ones, you're good. They might not be with your current wife, but that's life.
But seriously - if you have to be there for a board meeting and you're flying in the day before anyways, go to the game if you're able to make it...there's not much else you could be doing. Just don't make a big deal of it, and get on the first flight home that you can.

As a Father of 3 I say Book it... Worst Case is you have to sell the tickets on Stub Hub or something and its the Leafs so i'm sure you'll at least get your money back.
Your flying for the board meeting anyways. So depending on your company if she goes in to labour your either Canceling your outbound flight or flying back on the first plane you can get out either way.
My Opinion on due date is its inexact anyways... lots of variables so don't worry too much about it. My first was a week early. Second a week late. 3rd 2 weeks early. For my Third I was working a camp based job and was about to fly up for my shift the day before my wife went into labour...
Also cherish it... probably gonna be your last fun night out for the next 10 years... hahahaha

Sounds like a no brainer to book the tickets and sell them if you need to.

Agree with calf. If you have to be in Toronto for the Board Meeting, I would go out one day early and catch the game. It's not like you're flying across the country -- I'm assuming your wife has help/support at home in case she needs it while you're away.
PS. Congrats!

I think firstborns tend to average on the long side of the due date, so you'll probably be fine. Congratulations! Had our first this year and it is amazing.

I think first births actually have a higher tendency of being early.

To throw more complexity, my wife was 5 weeks early (2nd child), I was 5 weeks late (1st child and would still be in the womb if the arsewipe of a doctor didn't cut me out).
My biggest worry is being in Toronto, in transit and not being back in time for the birth.
But really, what are the odds, right?
The nature of the board meeting means going up the day before regardless (no way in hell I'll be taking the 5:15am flight to Toronto, meeting from 8:30am-3:30am then on a 6:45pm flight arriving home (after connection) at midnight).

Just have a plan ready in case you need to book it back home in short notice. Have contact info handy, make sure you have Uber all setup and ready to go (it's awesome in Toronto), and such.

That's not true at all. Due dates can be off by a couple weeks

I'd say 80% chance your first child won't be on time anyways. I'd go.

I just want to weigh in here to say that I don't consider it a roadtrip if you are flying somewhere. Driving has to be a significant part of the experience.
