Default Santa Monica vs Manhattan Beach

I'm taking a quick long weekend trip to LA next month. I am staying near the airport. Usually I spent my time in Santa Monica when I do this, but my favourite restaurant there closed down, so I'm looking at other options too.

It looks like Manhattan Beach is a similar distance from the airport area, but south rather than north.

Has anyone been to either / both and what are your thoughts on the two areas?

Manhattan Beach is nice but I always found Santa Monica to have more going on, especially at night with the boardwalk and promenade.

All the hockey players apparently live in Manhattan beach so I'm sure there's lots to do there but I haven't found it.

I was in Santa Monica in late July for a couple days and it was the most fun I've had all year. Lots to do. Beach was awesome, it's just so... California. Would recommend. I also went to Manhattan Beach but only for a couple hours and not at night so it's not a fair comparison.

Manhattan Beach has a nicer seaside town vibe (that's also where I saw Darryl Sutter having a nice beach stroll in his Wranglers). If you've already been to Santa Monica, I would definitely give it a try this time.

I remember seeing Everclear play the Max Bell. Nickleback opened for them.

Locals like Hermosa Beach for the night-life. Not far from the airport.

Stayed here on a business trip a little while back: http://www.beach-house.com/hermosa-beach/index.aspx

Unreal location right on the strand, and literally a 30 second stumble from a bunch of good bars and shops. Not to mention, this is your view for breakfast:

Unfortunately, the hotel is already booked. Maybe next time.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I ended up spending the weekend in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Originally I planned to spend one day there and one in Santa Monica, but I enjoyed it enough to go back a second time. Definitely not as much action as Santa Monica, but I loved the laid back beach vibe.

I can understand why all the hockey players live there. If I was going to live in the LA area and could afford it, I would certainly give it a lot of consideration.
