It's odd how much more well spoken and normal he seemed as a 15 year old than he does now. It's so uncomfortable and cringey watching him speak now.

Since you're the expert on videos, does this video seem a little edited towards the end? It seemed a little edited but couldn't tell.

After he says "maybe like a Lucic or something like that", to me it seems they cut something out and then cut to him saying "it would be an honor".

Maybe? Can't tell from the video since they're showing him accepting an award during that time.

Sounds like he could be answering a new question at that time though. But I don't think so.

Sounds like he's just finishing his thought about playing in the NHL.

I think we're trying too hard to pile on, lots of kids (at that time) would love an imposing 30 goal scoring bully on their wing.

but dont get me wrong, i hate that little pouty b*tch.

I also don't think Edmonton was the only team interested in giving him a similar contract.

Plus, Boston had just won the cup when McDavid was 15 and Lucic was a beast during that run if I remember right. I think every aspiring NHLer would've wanted to play on the same line as him at that point, and certainly not against him.

I like to hack on the Oilers like everyone else, but we all should agree that at the time this video was shot, Lucic was one of the best power forwards in the game.

I think all Flames fans should be thankful that he isn't one of the best power forwards in the game anymore, and he will be part of the Oilers until 2023.

Gotta agree with other posters. Lucic used to be a beast out there and one of the best power forwards in the game. Tbh he was one of my favorite player in the league for a while

All 30 GMs would give up their first born to have Lucic in his prime. He brought the full gritty package no other player in his generation brought. Iginla was the last power forward to Gordie-Howe hat-trick it on the regular, before Lucic came along.

Lucic earned his contact from his solid career. There's nothing to see here

Correct he has had a great career however the NHL has been moving away from rewarding players for what they did in the past and instead are rewarding players for what they can do in the future. The Lucic contract will be okay for a year or two but then will turn horrible.

Not even joking that this is the first interview I've seen McDavid in where he doesn't look completely dejected and depressed.

It's also likely the only pre-draft lottery interview of him I've ever watched.

Coincidence?

I thought the exact same thing AC, The kid used to be bright and cheary with a legitimate smile. Every interview I have seen him in since he seems so dam blah is depressing.

Responsibility for the oilers is crushing the kid under its weight. I truly believe that

Wow, Edmonton really did suck the life and soul out of the poor kid. Growing up, he probably dreamt of playing for a winning organization, or at the very least, your hometown. And he literally gets drafted by the worst managed team in the league. I wonder if the guy's got a 7 year countdown clock lol.

Is it weird that I feel so bad for that kid because now I'd just as soon step on his face as look at him?

That is the media scrutiny and the pressure of being the captain and face of the franchise when not really prepared for it.

I rarely do any interviews while a trial is ongoing because I know I will be very guarded and constantly analyzing in my head whether I am about to say anything that will get me into trouble. As a result, any interview I do in those situations makes me look like a tool. I have a facial tell that my wife picks up every time and says, "you were thinking something other than what you were saying."

I suspect the 15 year old player never thought about such things whereas the current player has it nearly consuming him when a camera is in his face. I mean, if he messes up a sentence, it will be a national story. It is harder than people think to present as articulate and comfortable in an interview even without such pressure.
